My original point is, you said you wouldn't use google or gmail because of this(the cookies and the link to gmail). What do you use? Can you really trust any website? Correction, you said you block the google cookie. Do you use a google scraper? How do you know they are legit? My point is, I agree, but I'm paranoid enough as it is, so I take the "civil disobedience" course. Rosa Parks finally had enough, so she took her stand. I'm not comparing myself to Mrs. Parks in terms of magnitude. I'm not an evil person. I'm not actively plotting against the goverment. I hope that google destroys any records before they would be forced to turn them over to the government. Google has gotten big enough that they may actually be able to win this.
No, I think we are in total agreement. Which search engine do you use? What webmail or email? Are you a Ham radio operator? I've been to the gmail-is-too-creepy website. I'm just choosing to draw the line on what I think is right. I don't want intrusive government. I've resigned myself that this government is too intrusive. What do I do now? My point isn't about drugs, it is about there being people who are a minority. This minority does things that the majority finds to be undesirable (though not necessarily wrong in the sense that other cultures do it). The Bill of Rights is there to protect them [the minority](along with the Constitution).
I don't have a problem with you not using google. I would never advocate that everyone use the same thing (whether it is a search engine or anything else). Logs are going to be kept. If not by google, maybe by some "man in the middle" box. What do I do? I have to interact with other people, so I can't always use PGP (for example). The privacy statement is worthless. It is a "feel good" panacea.
I've already screwed up my credit enough for the loan part (I have people whom I can borrow from. People who know that I'm worth it). I don't "need" a drivers license. I wouldn't be so sure about the holding office part (not that I want too). And I believe I'm done with college. You are right. What are the solutions? Not use any search engine? No email? No cell phone? live in a shack in Minnesota? I already feel as though I'm a step away from the gulag.
A privacy statement isn't worth the electrons it is written on. What is my solution? Live in a commune somewhere? There are millions of people with the same problems I have. Marion Berry got re-elected after being caught on tape smoking crack. I'm not disagreeing with you, but your answers are simplistic.
I agree with you. And what is occuring is wrong. But I think you are missing my point. I have used illegal drugs. I have gotten in trouble for this in my past. This is public record. I believe that the drug war is wrong. I have discussed this at length with my father. I have discussed my drug use with my father. He disagrees with me on some points (but also believes that the War on Drugs is wrong), and he is a fine upstanding citizen (i.e. he doesn't use illegal drugs). I also happen to like porn. So do millions of other Americans (and people of all nationalities). Same is true of marijuana. Millions. Now, if I'm conspiring against the government, I'm not going to use insecure communications. Do I want the government reading my correspondence? Do I want them seeing what I've searched for? No. Hell No! Should they be able to? No. No. No.
Terrorists aren't dumb. I believe this is a trojan, like others have mentioned. But I like gmail over all other webmails, because its interface is superior to all others I've used. If they are going to come after me, then they will be coming after millions of people. My neighbors know about me, I trust them, they trust me. We are in a police state, I know this. Where do you draw the line on paranoia? I don't live near my parents. I'm not going to get them to use PGP because they aren't that savy. If I can't have a frank discussion with my father (be it through the telephone, the mail, or gmail) then we are all in deep shit. This is what I meant by contrarian view. I understand your points, I agree with them, but I've had it, I'm going to call a spade a spade. The Bush administration is deluded, and evil. They need to go. What am I supposed to do? Take up arms? It is like the interstate, if everyone speeds, they can't arrest everyone. There are still more citizens than police. They don't have enough jail space for everyone. Are they going to resort to genocide?
Am I making sense? I pay cash for most things. I don't have credit cards (anymore). I'm already paranoid (Johnny Cashed isn't my real name). But when people talk about google cookies and such, they are missing the point. What makes them think any other search engine (webmail, email, etc.) is any better? The privacy statement? What if they lied?
Your point is valid. I take a contraian view, in that if it ever comes that that the government, political opponents, employers, etc. ever get access to my gmail correspondence with my family and friends, and try to use what I said against me, then they will also be coming after huge numbers of people. At that point, then yes, it will truly be a police state of Orwellian proportions, and hopefully there will be a Joseph Welch moment (Mr. Welch, the Army's Lawyer during the McCarthy communist witch hunt hearings).
I'm willing to bet my life on this (the part about things I've said in confidence to friends and family being used against me). This isn't about gmail, this is about any webmail or email that runs through a server you don't own. This is extended to letters and other correspondence. I believe in the Bill of Rights, even though they are under assault. Can they come after everyone? "Have they no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have they left no sense of decency?" (a slightly rephrased version of Mr. Welch's quote)
I talked about acronyms, because Taco did, and you quoted him. Acronyms are a big source of confusion, but your right, I'm merely using it as an example. Blender, I never used it, it doesn't interest me specifically. I know that in this context, it isn't something you make cocktails or milkshakes in. I have used some 3D CAD packages, I assume you know CAD is in this context. Slashdot is to me a general interest website for a specific audience, kinda like Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, Scientific American, all wrapped into one. This audience, nerds if you will, is a curious bunch, usually with a scientific mindset. It seems to me that you want all your information handed to you on a silver platter. I don't know what Slashdot's business model is. I don't subscribe at this point, because I'm satisfied with it for the most part, the ads don't bother me, and I don't really care how/. gets its income. Now, that said, I come to slashdot for the news that interests me, and for some intellegent disscussion. The spelling and grammar of the readers doesn't bother me, I make mistakes and typos. The editor's mistakes aren't a big deal either, sometimes the headlines are thrown out of proportion, and I really don't like to see dupes, because I'm a daily reader, and I am hungry for new shit. I also like Cursor.com for other news, because it saves me from having to go to a dozen websites, they do it for me. Slashdot started as a blog of sorts, and maybe now they are rich and have a huge staff, I don't know and I don't care. Sometimes Scientific American is over my head, but it is still interesting. Popular Science is a very understandable mag, and I wish it was better, and by better, more challenging to my mind (I quit it long ago). Your complaint is valid, and I'm not dismissing it, but maybe you can ask in the comments section, and get the in depth info you need, instead of increasing the workload of the editors. Interaction is good, no? Yes, there will be some smartasses, and such, that is why I do my own research if something catches my interest, because I'm a curious person, and I know how to go to a library, or use the internet. How low a floor do you set? Yes, a balance must me struck, but somethings you have to do yourself, because they don't teach you that in school, life, etc. I'm not trying to be patronizing here. Sometimes in life, I run across words I don't know. Sometimes in the newspaper, I don't know what some political terms are, because politics aren't as interesting as engineering or science to me. I look it up. I like chess players who are better than me, because it is a challenge (I'm better than my circle of friends, so I have to seek them out).
I'm not trying to be argumentitive, and I think you position is valid, but it is a tech website, and there is going to be technical info that some readers aren't going to get. That should be the default assumption. Also, there are going to be some readers that try to be disruptive, because they are "punks" or such. I had class clowns to put up with in school.
My original point is that curiousity is a common trait of nerd (my assumption). If they don't know what you are talking about, they usually look it up.
I'm not trying to redefine the problem. I just think that there could be no end in sight, if you want to define everything.
It depends on what you are recycling. You made an unfair statement. I know the local scrap metals place will give you cash for many metals. Maybe it isn't worth your time and energy, but for some of us, we have things that can be recycled in a cost and energy efficient manner. Aluminum scrap (not just cans), steel, car batteries, copper, etc. Plastic bottles? maybe that isn't cost effective. But aluminum is very energy intesive to smelt and get out of the ground. Hell, I dump aluminum all the time at the scrap yard, for free, just because they are performing a service and the amount of money is insignificant to me (because it is such a small amount). Do I make a trip there just for that? (and waste gas) No, I do it when it is "on the way" already. If you have kids with nothing but time on their hands (I don't but I was a kid on a farm) you can put them to work and it will make a difference in your wallet. Some recycling programs are a waste, of time and money, but not all. Extracting the gold in the plating on your circuit board is a very difficult and energy intensive process, and not worth it (at the moment).
Ever read trade magazines? They often use acronyms in a manner that assumes the reader knows what it is, because they are in the same field. I am comparing slashdot to that. There is a lot of things in the summary that tells me if I'm interested in it or not. If I don't know what they are talking about in the summery, then they either really screwed up the summary or I am not knowledgable about the subject. It just seemed as though you were being callous with the "It's a task to assign to someone" line. You assume that they have people around who need tasking (maybe so, maybe not). I was raised in a house with my father who was an engineer at NASA. Talk about acronyms! I still encounter acronyms that are the same acronym, but completely different things. A list would have to include all varieties of the same acronym, and you would still have to sort it out. Example: ATM are you talking about Asynchronous Transfer Mode, Automated Teller Machine, or Amateur Telescope Maker. I read Sky & Telescope for years and thought that ATM was shorthand (not an acronym) for astronomer, because they use it so much. PCB: is it Printed Circuit Board, or PolyChlorinated Biphenyls, the oil compound used in transformers. That last one comes up alot because they are both related to electronics. Answers.com has a good listing of acronyms. Blender in your use does not seem to be an acronym, so I would say that it is a poor example. My point is, there are already very good resources out there, and there seems to be a lot of acronyms. The internet is a tool, maybe slashdot could put a link to Answers.com? I also deal with the military alot, they use a shitload of acronyms.
I'm not disagreeing with you, but slashdot is on the internet. There are a lot of redundant acronyms, with different meanings. Would it be too much to ask if readers who didn't know the acronym, look it up on google (or your search engine of choice)? You are already on the internet, yes? I know that I do this.
Thank you. I'm glad you didn't just burn off the insulation like some people do. Recycling is a good thing, and I'm sure the energy spent by you doing this was a pain in the ass, but copper is a valuable element in its own right. I've heard of too many people burning insulation off of copper to reclaim it.
Why would you assume? sure the review is underwhelming (after I saw what it was, I completely lost interest). Not trying to flame, but to accuse/. & Tweak News of improprieties seems a bit baseless here. Is there a past history of a lot of tweak news items crossposted on/.? Just because an anonymous user submitted, you assume that money changed hands? I get modded a troll for what? I think some readers are really getting paranoid. I mean, why are XorNand's comments consistantly modded +2 or +3? (I don't have an axe to grind, I don't have a problem with XorNand except that he "signed" his comment with "the Slashdot community" I believe he has been modded fairly) I'm not accusing, but it is just as suspicious as your accusations. Are some readers gaming the system with multiple accounts and modding themselves up? Are readers friends modding each other up? Hell, I had mod points, I should have just modded this thread down, because I think it was addressed by taco, and I believe it is offtopic. Instead I decided to comment.
You don't speak for me (XorNand). I guess/. can't mention the latest stuff from Microsoft or Apple without it being a "slashvertisement" I don't have a CompUSA in my town. Just because you saw it 6 months ago, doesn't mean everyone saw it. Personally I don't care about the keyboard for gaming, I was looking at it for other reasons, but I couldn't, because TFA was slashdotted. When I was much younger, I read Popular Science (PS) magazine and they have the "What's New" section that was often cool new products. I enjoyed that section at the time, but I don't think PS was compensated for that. I see this as something that the/. "community" might find interesting. Maybe you should have submitted this 6 months ago.
It is an entertaining cartoon. And I think it is more sophisticated than it has been given credit for in this particular thread. But a cartoon none the less. Of course, when I say cartoon, I'm not dismissing it, animation of all types is a wonderful medium of expression.
I don't know what the target audiance for the powerpuff girls is but it seems to me is is targeted for the late-high school to college age crowd first (the animated series), then the little dolls and other marketing trinkets are for the "tween" crowd who likes it because their older sister likes to watch it while getting high on some bud (I would hope that last part is without little suzy hanging around). And as the stereotype goes, older sis, Amber, while on the surface is a neohippie college girl, majoring in "eastern studies" is actually a very smart, "empowered" woman who is also interested in civil rights. And can enjoy a good powerpuff girls episode. Did I mention that the powerpuff girls have a arch enemy who resembles one of the apes in planet of the apes? I can't recall his name right now.
helium balloons have a stressed skin. The elasticity of the balloon material gives it "pressure". A rigid structure like a zepplin doesn't compare. A blimp is closer to your analogy, but it doesn't "shrink" as it loses gas. The envelope doesn't have elasticity like a latex balloon. Now if you are refering to a polyester (mylar) helium balloon, it isn't a stressed skin. I wasn't suggesting that it "reinflates" it. I think your analogy is incorrect. What happens if you place an inverted cup in water and poke a hole in the top of the cup? you could do the same with gasoline (it is less dense than water) and the gasoline would seep out the top, while water filled up from the bottom. Does this make sense?
I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just repeating what I read in Air & Space magazine. It seems to me, that if you shot a blimp or zepplin, the bullet would pass clear though. This would make two holes, one on bottom, one on top. The gas (He or H) would then seep out the top, and as it exited, air would be drawn in from the bottom hole. The ancedote in Air & Space didn't go into too much detail on that point. I would think that any lighter than air craft cannot have much pressure inside, or the gas would become more dense than air. Blimps are non-rigid, and therefore do need pressure to maintain shape. Zepplins are rigid, and therefore are not dependant on pressure to maintain shape.
Yes, but hydrogen added fuel to the fire. Helium might have helped to extingush it. At least it wouldn't have supported it. And to respond to the "hydrogen would have mostly gone up" statement, wouldn't the hydrogen going up would have in drawn air from the bottom? A zepplin is a displacement ship. It gets lift from displacing air. If the less dense gas that displaced the air rises, it would have been "flooded" with air containing oxygen. Much like a sinking ship's air rises as it is flooded with water.
Well, I for one would like to take a transatlantic airship trip. They could put an observation deck on top complete with a gyrostablized telescope and you can enjoy the night sky sans light pollution. you could fly low and fish from it as well.
as AC pointed out, it is a 10% bonus not 100%. I'm not going to dispute the flammability of the skin, but the color of the resulting flame isn't indicitive of much. Hydrogen burning in air at STP is virtually colorless (I've been burned because I couldn't see the flame in daylight). It is a very pale blue. Much like putting sodium chloride on a platinum wire in a flame, and you'll understand my point on the color of the resulting flame.
Air and Space magazine did an article on airships a long time ago. They had an ancedote about a goodyear blimp being shot with a rifle while it was flying. They said that atmospheric air would actually flow into the blimp because it is less dense. While I'm sure it depends on the geometry of the specific situation, I would not want atmospheric air to enter my hydrogen lifted airship/blimp. The bullet holes were small enough that it didn't affect the flight of the blimp.
That said, The US still had a strangle hold on helium at the time. The only way that helium is produced on earth is through radioactive decay. It is recovered from natural gas that is under Texas. I'm sure it occurs elsewhere in the same way, but the US has a lot of it.
They used hydrogen, because the US has a virtual monopoly on helium. The US would not sell the Germans helium. Anyone can make hydrogen. It does give a little more lift, but as we all know, it burns.

Hell, I had mod points, I should have just modded this thread down, because I think it was addressed by taco, and I believe it is offtopic. Instead I decided to comment.
You don't speak for me (XorNand). I guess /. can't mention the latest stuff from Microsoft or Apple without it being a "slashvertisement" I don't have a CompUSA in my town. I see this as something that the /. "community" might find interesting. Maybe you should have submitted this 6 months ago.
I think Taco did address this well enough.
I was referring to the "little suzy" comment, not yours. I agree with you. To me "little suzy" is a little younger.
Much like a sinking ship's air rises as it is flooded with water.
lest he be accused of karma whoring.
As they say, If you have to ask, it costs too much. They probably wouldn't want me to visit anyway. I would just stare and oogle.
