PS: Katz. For the last time: ACCESS TO GUNS IS NOT THE PROBLEM. GET OVER IT, OR REPEAL THE 2ND AMENDMENT. DISCIPLINE AND TRAINING WITH FIREARMS IS PART OF THE PROBLEM, SO ENCOURAGE FIREARMS TRAINING.
Indeed, the problem of violence in the American culture cannot be blamed on one factor, guns in this case, but I think most rational people would agree that the ease with which one can attain a gun today contributes to the problem. Anyone suggesting otherwise is not serious about tackling in the problem and is only contributing to the status quo.
Until people make a good faith effort to put all the issue on the table we will all collectively be victims of gun violence as a society. We are at a critical point in this ongoing social debate, however. Some of us have seemingly become too inured to violence in our country to fight for change.
if you really mean the Internet, ok, but I'm pretty sure it's the WWW they are talking about.
I wonder what Tim Berners-Lee would have applied his hyper text technology to if there hadn't been an underlying internet. Toasters perhaps?
Let's not have a pissing contest here my little defensive Euros. Everyone is doing there part to make the internet work. Staking national claim to something that clearly had international support at all levels is ludicrous.
And from what country did the browser technology originate? Without that the internet would still be a plaything in academia.
Ok, so you want to play that game. Try this on for size. What country invented the internet? Without that Tim Berners-Lee would still be shuffling paper up in CERN.
When you use specious arguments to make a point you wind up looking stupid.
Search engines are such a part of the fabric of the internet that they've become taken for granted; you use them without really thinking about them. I for one have always assumed that they were agnostic in that they only analzyed your request in terms of finding matching pages. What's actually revealed here is they are analyzing the content of your request as well. This is chilling.
What other keywords are they looking for? What are they doing behind the scenes when presented with these keywords? I don't consider myself to be a privacy zealot but things like this make me wonder whether we truly know the internet as much as we think we do.
yeah, this Carter guy bored me with his Mapper, Packer crap. All pseudo-intellectuals bore me, though. Some people write to communicate. Others write to "hear" themselves speak. Which group do you think Carter is from ?

This was a great article and was very informative. I wasn't aware that GIF's could be used to track us through the internet. And to think, Slashdot is one of the websites that allow them to perpetrate this crap on us. I used to think Rob and Hemos were working with us but they're really working for The Man after all.
Hi there! Are you really this stupid or did you have a bad morning?
Admittedly, a lot of people jump the gun on privacy issues, but there is nothing wrong with valuing your privacy. Trusting business to parry your concerns on an equal footing with their financial bottom-line, may work for you, but most rational human beings have a healthy suspicion, justly deserved I might add, of entrusting business to concern themselves with anything other than their own interests.
I'm sure you will probably wind up with less ulcers than us whiners but you'll probably wind up being exploited as well. Hopefully your exploitation won't cause you any considerable damage.
Dude, I agree with you 100% and it's refreshing to see you critique your post so honestly. It's a case of a moderator wanting to use up all his points. Sometimes it's better to just eat the points fellas.
How about coming through on their promises to build a robust, stable operating system that won't crash because of errant applications. Oh, my bad...they can't.
The stupidest moderation category is Redundant, IMO. How the hell can anything be redundant in a forum? If someone wants to express their opinion, who cares if 50 people said it better? Maybe the 51st guy will say it the best.

My, my. AC displaying a bit of provincial jingoism. I don't know if you've been too busy working on your kernel but you might want to pay attention to what's left of the US Motor inddustry because they're buying everything up in Europe.
Maybe AC's still pissed about the Ryder Cup thumping. Nothing a nice kernel recompile won't get out of his system, I would imagine.

I just really started getting into sci-fi, outside of the usual stuff they served up in high-school like Arthur C. Clarke's Childhoods' End.
My first stabs were with William Gibson, of course, since he is the "father" of cyberpunk. I enjoyed his short stories and read Neuromancer which didn't knock me out. I guess it had lost the visionary aspect and I was left with just the story and Gibson's literary styling.
I also tackled some Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash). Thoroughly recommend him, as do most people in/., as Stephenson seems to the topic of several of news articles and reviews recently.
I understand your lament about lack of time. I would imagine we all feel that way today. I make an effort to read at least 100 pgs of something that I want to read each day. After poring over manuals, specs and email every day, it's the least I can do to restore some kind of sanity to my two brain cells.
You're obviously brain damaged. Any movie with Keanu Reeves AND Ice-Tee is garuanteed to be a joke. They totally blew it with the movie. The short story was a masterpiece.

I tend to agree. Most fantasy is esapist drivel. Sure, it captivated my limited attention span when I was 12 but I tend to look for something more substantive nowadays. It's weird how some of the "acknowledged" Sci-Fi masters of today are nothing more than glorified fantasy authors jumping on a bandwagon. Thankfully, Stephenson is the real deal.
