Back in India I used to use my pentium II machine without a fan on the SMPS for around 2 years.
Nothing ever happened to the PC. I used the PC 5 hours a day, and shut it off when I dint need it (it was not "always on", as is usually
recommended).
There was a nice layer of dust hiding the actual components on the motherboard (I used to occasionally wipe off whatever was conveniently accessible).
And in India the ambient temperatures can be quite high!
The PC is still doing fine there. (I replaced the fan eventually)
