you usually keep your ip for a long time, as your modem keeps renewing it. ive had my ip since i got OOL.
they are rolling out business plans with an actual static ip, however.
What they do, apparently, is poll a modem's bandwith over a 3 hour period (not sure when this period occurs,) and if you upload more then the set number of mb during this time, the CMTS pushes a new CFG to your modem.
If you use DOCSDIAG to read the cfg, you can see that your upstream is capped at 150kbit instead of 1mbit as before.
But, if you dont abuse your upstream (ie leave p2p open all day and all night) youre fine.
I am on OOL, I host 15 player battlefield servers for a few hours a day when I play. When i'm done, i shut it off. No big deal.
Theres flexability in the rule.
