Damn exchange rate. A year or so ago you could have had one for $380!

This is true. I've found that a decent developer knows how to create programs that behave nicely. A bad developer needs to be protected from himself (and the system he's working on). There's many ignorant developers as well as ignorant sys admins.

As an IT Manager, my job is to make you think I'm working for you, doing everything in my power to make your system run smoothly, and give you the things you need to do your job. At the same time, I'm employing a plan behind the scenes to make it easier for you to do things the way I want you to, and make it very difficult to do it (wrong|badly|'your' way|any other way). If I do this well, you never know it's going on, things 'just work' and everyone wins.

Not any more. We looked at the new version, it's got way too many 'features' for my taste. Much too complicated for a 100 or so node network. So we moved to RapiDeploy. Much much better. Super easy interface, easy to make network boot disks, and can strip the SIDs, change the computer names, join the domain, etc. Oh, and like 1/2 the price.

As to all those saying they want to backup a running workstation, are you crazy?? In my perfect world, all workstations are imaged, work is stored on the server, and if a workstation so much a hiccups, it's re-imaged. Forget fixing it, blow it away. Work should not be local anyway, cause who backs up workstations?! NOBODY!

And what about when your ISP is clueless? Mine (BT Openworld UK) did the same when blaster hit, and blocked ping and traceroute as well for weeks. Now they claim to have lifted the restrictions, but my DSL line is still blocked from the outside world completly. No web server, no FTP, no terminal server... all of which worked before the blaster worm. When I call support, they tell me that accessing my computer from the outside world is not supported. However, they say they are not blocking anything and it should work. I tell them it doesn't. They say it's not supported, I can't even open a ticket to get it looked into! The support person doesn't understand that I don't need support, I need them to unblock the ports they blocked!! They say 'sorry...'. I really want these guys looking after my virus and worm scanning... right.
