If it were me, I would be inclined to release it as open-source. Although money could be made from you effort, sometimes, although it's hard to do, one must see the bigger picture. The advancement of our society depends upon the sharing of information. What if we all had to pay a fee to be able to light a fire, or if E=mc^2 were patented? Maybe those examples aren't very good, but I think the point is there. If we continually close new technology to others, we run the risk of being completely bound by the cumulitve cost of all of the technology that goes into each new technology. Eventually, most of the technology available could be available only to a select few---and we return to the Dark Ages. This is where it starts. As a society, we need to consider the future of our society.
To me, that is the underlying principle of open-source. That is the reason I try to use open-source as much as possible.
