XNS is a digital identity protocol specification that Liberty could build off of the same way it is building off of SAML and other XNS security specifications. But the two are not synonomous.
XNS lays a Web services foundation for digital identity management. Every identity is treated as a logical XML document and XNS specifies the addressing syntax for these documents and attributes and the services available from an XNS identity. So it has a broad range of applications from from single sign-on to digital wallets to distributed document management.
