  1. Re:Of course... on Clinton Frowns on Anonymity · · Score: 1

    I want it all.

    I want privacy AND anonymity.

While I agree that a legislative solution is probably the worst possible case, I don't think that the government should abandon it's role in protecting citizens from each other. I also happen to think that Brin is more right than wrong in his arguments for a transparent society.

What if, for example, instead of passing a law requiring digital signatures with state-certified certificates on all internet communications (the logical extreme), the government passed a law that refused to purchase any commercial mail system that did not support signatures, and required an "anonymous reject" feature?

Vendors, wanting the big government $$$, modify their products accordingly. I get my freedom from trolls and spam, because the first thing I'll do is check that box. People who want to post anonymously are still free to do so.

And if you truly want anonymity, then don't use the internet.

The fact is, that the extreme level of anonymity that we have on the internet today has been demonstrated by, among other things, a series of recent DDoS attacks, to far exceed what is necessary for a civil society. I'm not arguing trading away freedom, I'm arguing requiring responsibility.

In real life, we often require registration/licensing to track activities that can harm others: driver licensing, gun permits, etc. I think that the arguments that are being made for this control should not be dismissed out of hand.

Here's a question for you legal types.

If some company decided to implement this, and it broke my video capture card or didn't work with my TV, could I and others so affected sue the manufacturer and Intel, on the grounds that it violated my "right" (loosely) to fair use of lawfully purchased media?

Actually, Windows NT 4.0 sales are very high right now in part because Microsoft is giving enormous Windows 2000 upgrade discounts to people who buy Windows NT 4.0 before Windows 2000 releases.

  4. Re:The Fundamental Difference. on Copyrights Need New Business Models · · Score: 1

Player keys will never be accepted by the marketplace. We need "people keys", e.g. media encrypted to an individual's personal key, so that (1) a particular individual can play media they've purchased on any machine at any time, and (2) the individual has a vested interest [potential revocation of their key] not to allow media they have purchased to be downloaded.

Technology like smart cards is just about to make this possible for the first time.

This has the added effect of freeing player manufacturers from purchasing keys from industry associations and being responsible for protecting those keys.

I agree with this idea. I would propose two other changes:

    (1) AC's automatically get bumped DOWN 1 point- they start at a disadvantage and must move up.

    (2) Moderation is more free- in other words, more people moderate more often. Let the free market decide which posts have value.

  8. Re:try to do some benchmarking before you buy on Pros & Cons of Different RAID Solutions · · Score: 1

3 disk RAID is faster than 5 disk RAID because of latency: the higher the number of disks in the array, the higher the probability that one of them will be at the maximum possible latency (i.e. it rotated past the data immediately before the request).

I also love the DPT SmartRAID V Series (I use a Decade in my workstation). As the last poster said, though, be sure to set your stripe size appropriately for your application.

Here's the problem with the timeout scenario: I'm as impatient as any other geek, and I don't want to wait 3-5 seconds for my real estate to come back. The problem is what to do if the cursor is under the toolbar when the mouse goes inactive- I can't just start typing until I wait for the timeout. Although this device isn't revolutionary, it's incrementally useful.
