I would have thought that cross platform, mpeg-4/2 should be at least as supported as quicktime.

The japanese government has taken a very strong position, forcing NTT (which owns all the local exchanges) to provide access to all comers to it's facilities. The resulting *competition* is why broadband access in japan is 10 times better than the US. (10x the speed, half the price) From what I hear of the US situation, the FCC etc have caved in to corporate interests, just as the US govt in general has.

    1) The terms of service are the same as the other broadband providers: You can cancel any time with one month's notice, and there are no limits on vpns. Yahoo's provided access point is either a plain router, or a wireless/wired router if you want to pay a little extra on the rental.
    2) From what I have read, some estimates are that they are spending $250 for each customer aquired. The contract has NO minimum length, as I stated above. 15 months just looks like an estimate of the break-even time.

To get just a JVM (the java runtime environment or jre) you can click on the gif that says "get java technology for your desktop", the link on the left called "Downloads", the "Standard edition J2SE" gif, links to j2SE followed by the "J2SE Downloads" tab.. The description of the download links reads "The links below will take you to the download sites for the versions of the J2SE platform that are currently available. At each of the sites, you can download the Java 2 SDK, Java 2 Runtime Environment , documentation, and other products related to the J2SE platform. "
On all the download pages, for all versions, you have the option of downloading JRE or an SDK.
Doesnt seem so hard to me..

  5. Re:Huh? on Traffic Shaping on DSL? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I believe that it is due to ADSL's asymmetric nature. An ADSL connection has an upstream and downstream speed, such as 1.5MBps vs 128kbps. I think the connection is NOT duplex, so when you are sending upstream, you cannot be recieving downstream. So if you upload at 64kbps, you are effectively using HALF your bandwidth, limiting your downstream speed to 750kbps. i.e. if you are transmitting half the time, you can only recieve half the time. So if you use too much of your upstream bandwidth, you can bring the downstream to a crawl.
