    If you are a linux user, most likely gnuplot and LaTeX are already installed, but in any case, they should be trivial to install (at least in any mayor distro).

    gnuplot is a command line tool, but it is fairly easy to use, start it with

    $ gnuplot

    and then

    gnuplot> help plot

    will get you started. There is a nice tutorial I found searching in google: http://www.cs.uni.edu/Help/gnuplot/. To use the graphs in LaTeX save them in eps or pdf, and then you can use the graphics package to include them.

    Hope this helps

    Excel, for thechnical graphs? you are joking right? If you had said Microcal Origin or Sigma Plot I might have taken you seriously, but Excel? Anyway, the only way to get proper profesional looking technical graphs is gnuplot and LaTeX.

    And don't even get me started about Excel regression capabilities, that is an even bigger joke.

    It's like this. You are a software developer. You write communication and telephone equipment software. You are hired by AT&T as a subcontractor to, what? Write telephone equipment software. You are not obligated to have them as your only client. You are also not obligated to give them everything your company creates.

    I am not so sure about that, it is not uncommon to have clauses on supply contracts limiting what you can and can't do with the competition. If you are small and need the contract to pay you mortgage you either take it (and sell your soul) or leave it and go and flip burgers.

    Well, I don't know about other countries, but in Spain there is an equivalent procedure, called "Deposito Legal" (legal deposit), and they have specific instructions for computer programs, I have used it. I would imagine that at least France (from where Spain used to copy these sort of things) has something similar.

    I think the point of asking for a theoretical treatment is very important. The theoretical treatment allows to generalise the results, and a well developed theoretical analysis of the results within the relevant framework is allways helpful to reveal new patterns, if there are any.

    Anyhow, theoretical representation will most likely come after the empirical work. In the three major physical divisions (newtonian physics, electromagnetism/relativity and quantum mechanics) each theoretical framework became consistent after years of refinement to fit the empirical observations.

    As far as I can gather from the translation SCO had received an injunction which prevented them (SCO) from saying that Linux had stolen code until there is a court case failed on SCO's favour. SCO violated that injunction and that is what they are being fined for. There is no judgement on the value of SCO's claims, only that if they want to FUD based on the such claims, they will have to show first that the claims are valid.
