  3. enough with the water analogy on Scientists Make Item Invisible to Microwaves · · Score: 1

Ok, lets try a little experiment.
Take something like a wind tunnel, only filled with flowing water.

Instead of a small stream of smoke (or whatever they use in a wind tunnel), set up a horizontal grid injecting about a dozen different coloured dye streams.
Put in your rock, hit the big red button marked GO. Observe the colour of the water on the other side of the rock. Are the dye streams in their proper positions?

    Not bloody likely.

This method of invisibility will only be effective if the object to be rendered invisible remains stationary against a uniform background, and maybe not even then. Set against a background of, for example, a larger than life poster of your local dictator on the side of a building, what you will see is a rather obvious blur in the shape of a guy holding a gun. Obvious, because it clearly doesnt fit in with what you should be seeing if there was nothing there.

Still, i'm sure its wonderfull science and engineering, and many usefull things will come from all the money being thrown in this direction. So by all means continue with these attempts at invisibility, just toss out that water analogy and the baby who came up with it please.

its been ruled by the courts here in australia that selling any hardware (dvd player, gaming console, ect) is anti-competetive (and therefore illegal) and that australians have the right to buy dvds ect at the best price they can find them, including from overseas sources. these same courts ruled it legal to mod-chip playstations, though doing so would void your waranty. the company i work for purchases dvds and cds wholesale from overseas for retailing, and from the number of complaints i see with customers complaining that their systems wont play the movies/music, i dont think the hardware companies are paying to much attention anyway. but then, we're all criminals down here anyway, its in the blood.

the same corporate mouth piece that asked a foriegn govt to act on the pirate bay? that was a piece of advice worth listening too from what i saw of the fallout. i certainly hope that the govts of the world noticed and decide that maybe this DRM being pushed on their citizens should be investigated before it gets even further out of hand. already we have region specific players and media (thankfully ruled anti-competetive and therefore illegal in my country). how long until sony CDs and DVDS can only be played on sony players?
