You can't copyright a typeface. You can copyright a font file (the actual file that sits on your hard drive).
So if a GPL font in a document would make the whole document GPL (which still isn't clear), it would only apply to the computer file representing the document. And this is the case only if the font is embedded in the document.
The copyright associated with the words, pictures and layout of a document is unaffected by any copyright on a font file.
I don't understand why they would restrict the op-ed page of all places.
What I really value about the Times and other papers is the through news reporting and analysis. That's the kind of thing that major papers are really good at and it takes resources that other organizations - particularly blogs and other websites - don't have.
But not opinions. Everyone's got those. Sure most aren't insightful, well written or well researched. But a surprising amount of blogs are all three. Sure I enjoy reading the Times op-ed, but I read plenty of more preceptive commentary elsewhere on blogs and other small sites.
Besides it's not as if say David Brooks is using the Times' Baghdad bureau in some way that bloggers fundamentally can't. The columnists' big advantages: Fame and copyediting. Not worth $50/year.
Apparently the fact that some folks perfer dialup is front page news to the paper of record.

A warning to those of you using PithHelmet to block images. Remove it! It stopped the new version from launching and I couldn't even use my old version after I upgraded.
If you have PithHelmet installed go to : <harddrive>:Library:InputManagers:SIMBL and get rid of it. Or don't upgrade.
