Unfortunately these things will go in cycles until we are a lot more advanced as a civilisation than we are at the moment because good is lazy in too many cases.

There's a lot of stuff happening at the moment that most on /. would disagree with. But until evil flies high enough above the radar must people will just go along with the status quo.

Pity, because it will be a lot more difficult to do anything about it by then

So when Ms Spears does her work how much is she going to get paid for it?

You can't judge at the time whether somebody is creating something worthwhile so how do you decide what to pay them for their work, or even if they should be paid to do this in the first place instead of being encouraged to do something else.

I would be perfectly happy with the proposed scheme. The average usage of what I've bought is quite low and would be lower still if not brought up be the few items I listen to, watch, or read time and time again. Current rental models are too expensive and too inconvenient to be useful replacements but done properly this should allow the market to speak and should be able to lower our total costs.

Whether it would be done properly is, of course, another matter.

What a strange way to go about it. If it wasn't for copyright creative works would always be in the public domain.

If an ISP filters spam at the server then a lot of people using that ISP may not be aware that their email is filtered. Some of these may be the type of people to respond.

Even better (from spammer's POV) if they can get through while their competitors fail to do so then that user is more likely to open the mail because they won't have built up a resistance to the spam disease.

Well put. I'd just add one additional reason B5 is a classic. That's the theme for season 4. I have never heard another theme that adds so much to the program and is just so right for the program.

I used to record the show then watch the recording and I never fast forwarded through the season 4 theme.

The only problem being that the ending to the Night's Dawn trilogy is very deus ex machina.

I'm not saying that it shouldn't be read. It is an absolutely wild ride getting to the end. Just be aware that this is definitely one for the ride not the destination

Oh, and set aside a good chunk of time. All three books are over 1k pages

Possibly the most interesting part of the Culture though is Special Circumstances because it's culture seems so different to that of the Culture as a whole. Extremely manipulative of the rest of the Culture. If there's any chance of the Culture turning on itself then that's where it lies.

I'd love to see the Culture have a few more internal difficulties. The only conflict in the books seems to be for the individuals in the story. The Culture as a whole seems to breeze through anything.

The ship names don't hurt of course.

Report to homeworld: Using our awesomely advanced technology we crossed the vastness of interstellar space and found a secluded area of the planet to study to avoid scaring the natives. Unfortunately, we were unable to find the light switch that turns off the running lights.

As it happens I would be amazed if there wasn't alien life out there somewhere. I've just yet to be convinced that any of it is visiting us whether it is unintelligent, unable, unwilling or whatever. If they can get here then I would expect them to be quite capable of either making their presence known or keeping it hidden whichever their preference was.

There may be a simpler, less paranoid, explanation for this. Sites with more money have more money to spend on working out how to make the most of Google's (or any other SE's) algorithm.
