How can you _possibly_ blame Doom for these two characters doing what they did? I play Doom etc. but I'm not going around spraying bullets.

No. There are too many factors involved with what these people did, ranging from America's "achievement culture" - whereby if you're not good at sports/science/anyhting else, you're no good at all, to America's Gun culture - "It's in the Constitution, Son!", to lack of parental care/education, and a WHOLE lot more. Pinning this one on the fact someone may be a geek, play Doom or whatever is just Plain Nuts.

A bloody good point has arisen from all of this. As far as I can tell, there is NO online resource specifically aimed at tuning a Linux system to the hilt, to get that Ultimate Performance.

I may be wrong about this, but I haven't found one.

What this site should do, is be a repository for all kinds of Linux tuning - Kernel tuning, Apache Tuning, Oracle tuning - everything that can be tuned should be documented here!

  5. Symbiotic relationship is possible.... on Commercialism and Linux on CNN · · Score: 2

...IF both "sides" (i.e. the Linux community and the commercial interest) can come to a compromise - but only the best compromise.

I mean that, IMO, the Linux community should recognise that there will be a need to steer the way that the commercial people use Linux, and that the commercial side will need to learn how to work with the Linux side, and recognise that Linux developement will/should ALWAYS be controlled by the developer community.

I think that this is the way to go, and that anyone who tries to fork Linux off for their own commercial purposes should be encouraged not to do it - this would be divisive, and as we know from past history, anything that fragmented Unix was detrimental to Unix.

The commercial side MUST be discouraged to do this.

Who cares if non-GPL software is being produced for Linux!!!

The point is that the _(GNU/)Linux O/S_ will remain GPL'ed!

It's your CHOICE if you decide to use this non-GPL software or not, and this is the point I wish most GPL "purists" would understand - non-GPL'd software cannot be a threat to Linux!

  8. Redhat Momentum Worrying - Not So... on Dell Buys Equity in Red Hat · · Score: 2

Are there not a few reasons as to why Red Hat is getting so much attention?...

    a) They appear to be the most visible Linux distribution producer of the lot. (Pacific HiTech appear to be the most visible Linux distribution producer in Japan - I also hear that Linux has taken off in a Big Way in Japan, due in part to the economic conditions there (i.e. bad) - Japanese business appears to have caught on to the fact that not only is Linux BETTER than NT, but an order of magnitude CHEAPER).

Being the most visible producer of a Linux distro, means that the PHB of Dell etc have a clear target to focus on.

    b) Red Hat is a _Business_, and it currently appears to be in the business of - from Dell's etc. perspective - an "up and coming" alternative to the proprietary world of MS, and if Dell or whoever wants to have a stake in Red Hat, so what?

    c) I simply think that Red Hat is being a shrewd player in the OS market. What better way to introduce Linux to the corporate world than to have Big Names invest luverly _cash_ in them? And then (hopefully) use that cash to produce a better distribution. Remember folks, RH is a business. Research and Development in a business costs Real Money - IF that's what RH is doing with the cash.

To sum up - I don't think this should be _worrying_ at all. Linux by mere definition of the GPL simply cannot be kidnapped by any one company or individual. Certainly, they can maybe produce their own proprietary stuff to be run under Linux, but surely it's up to _us_ - the customer/Linux community as a whole - that determines what can be done to Linux?

    OK....

    I had a look.

The reason is the Debian build.

I "alien"ed the RPM packages, installed them onto my Debian machine, ran them, and they are just as quick as running them on a Red Hat distribution.

The problem is with the debian package made. Maybe the person who packaged it used the "debug" version, not the "opt" version? I don't know.

Anyway, this is beside the point. You're talking about extremely Alpha code at the moment, not a fully functioning Beta release. There is NOT an issue with GTK, as was implied in an earlier post.
