my company started development with tomcat and it worked well. we then moved it into production and it started to choke as we added more sites and more traffic. memory usage became a real problem (even with only 20-30 sites and 1.5GB of RAM). our application is more complex than most so perhaps you won't run into the same problem. We switched to resin (http://www.caucho.com) and have been extremely pleased with performance and support. It's relatively cheap ($500 as opposed to $40k for websphere), and it's opensource.
