IIRC, the postinst of netbase (it was netbase, wasn't it?) asked whether you wanted to disable daytime, exec etc. services in the inetd.conf file, about since a month ago.
Not only that, but the rsh/rlogin/rexec daemons are NOT installed by default on new Debian 2.2 systems. They are in the package rsh-server, which is priority Extra.
On its own without any disturbance of the processor, have the drive scan and update whole contents of the drive from the volatile storage to the non-volatile storage at intervals depending on the latency of the medium.
What about sudden power outages? We have the same kind of problem as a disk-cache in RAM. Perhaps some small back-up electricity storage so that we have enough power to perform an update if we suddenly lose the mains...

Exactly. I'm glad to see an increase in the deployment of Linux. It means that in 5 or 6 years time, when I'll be looking to start my career as a guru, there should be plenty of opportunities to choose from:)
