It doesn't and it shouldn't. The problem is that browser makers can't decide which codecs to support.* A current list of which browsers support which codecs is here: http://diveintohtml5.org/video.html#what-works

*I still don't believe this is much of a problem though. You can specify a fallback format if the browser doesnt work with your preferred video format.

Opera Unite is not as decentralized as you may think. It still requires that you initialize connections via the machinename.username.operaunite.com domain that you are required to register with Opera. Sure, this is set up to easily traverse a NAT, but it isnt as decentralized as advertised (and you're restricted from hosting content that they consider "obscene, vulgar, hateful, threatening, or that violates any laws".

I honestly don't think Apple will care much. It leads to more people buying things from iTunes after all and cements the dominance of iTunes for managing media. Perhaps they even did this in conjuction with Palm... if you think about it they would have been smart to do so.

Think of iTunes as a driving force between iPod sales rather than the iPod as a driving force behind iTunes sales and you'll understand why Apple may be against this.

  7. Re:obviously they should sell advertising on Should Wikipedia Sell Advertising? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Actually, I think Wikipedia would have a hard time getting universities to pitch in - most professors I know don't quite understand it, and absolutely abhor its use. I know of professors who will fail an assignment citing it as a source.
Wikipedia should not be used in academia, but the usual reactionary attacks ("OMG! Anyone can edit it! Its unreliable!") aren't the reason why. Students shouldn't be citing Wikipedia because it's billed as an online encyclopedia. University students shouldn't be citing any encyclopedia at all including Encarta, Britannica, Wikipedia, etc. Encyclopedias paint a broad picture of a subject and can be used as a starting point in research, but they shouldn't contain any original research and thus shouldn't be used in academia, especially at the university level.

A multiplatform clone of Photoshop for $38??? Is this some kind of joke, or the best deal in picture editing ever? How come these kinds of things never get found ... I looked through a dozen shareware apps and never heard any mention of this.

It used to be named Pixel32, if that jogs the brain a bit... I used to use it on BeOS, when I was one of those whackos... ;)
