I can't claim to be an expert, but my understanding is that rounds are not fired into a suspected explosive device in the hope of triggering it, although that is one possible result that needs to borne in mind. Rather, the device is shot at in the hope that the rounds will disrupt the triggering mechanism.
A more advanced method of achieving the same is to use a small explosive device rather than gunshots; where I'm from this is called a "controlled explosion".
