  1. Re:ergmmm on What's in Your Billfold? · · Score: 1

I'm a college student with a similar, simple setup. I also have an extra $1 bill folded up deep inside my wallet. It can be a savior. The wallet is my grandfather's EEL skin bi-fold. I keep my Wegman's card on the keychain. I'm going to try to scan it in along with other barcodes, as another poster suggested.

  2. Hope it makes eBooks easier to enjoy on The BookMachine: On-Demand Book Printing in 3-5 Minutes · · Score: 1

Many people out there love to get PDF's and eBooks, especially from the free Gutenberg site. This machine could be great, if the price is right. I hope it's under $20 a print. Read below about how my last eBook cost me more than $60 dollars and a load of (recycled) paper. Last week, I purchased a PDF eBook online with a DRM that allowed me to print. I didn't want to read the 300(!) pages on screen so I printed it out on my home laser printer. Can you image how bulky the pile of papers was? I got frustrated with the mess after a while. So I burnt the file to a CD-R and brought to my nearest Kinkos. They could handle the job. The binding and cover were about $5 and the cost of 150 double-sided B&W pages was about $25. 2 hour later I had a usable eBook, probably similar to the machine this story is about. So printing things out in your home could cost 10-15 and they won't be bound nicely. Doesn't work well for bigger books. It cost me at least $15 in ink, and had already spent $30 online for the book. The author's site said it prints neatly. But it's also terribly unusable. There are many authors who are skipping the publisher and keeping the extra profit. John T. Reed sent me a nicely bounded book on Succeeding that I really enjoyed. And he created it at his house with a pro laser printer and the help of his family ;) I hope authors like him also sign up for this service and pass the savings on to us.

Interesting...I agree with Fweeky. Let's develop a term that's more appropriate for people who infringe copyrights. Off the top of my head, I suggest "copywrongers". :-)

  4. I read the EFF brief :-) on Lexmark DMCA Case Winds On · · Score: 1

I think the EFF's laywer, Wendy Seltzer, did an amazing service by writing that arguement. She seems to have done an excellent job in my non-lawyer opinion. I hope the arguement prevails and the EFF continues their noble quest!

  5. Re:POWER BUTTON vs Laziness on Do Later LCDs Need Screen Savers? · · Score: 1

"(2) I press the power button to turn the screen completely *OFF* when stepping away from my desk - even if it's only for an hour at lunch. Your "common sense" approach neglects consideration of a couple things: How much initial power does an LCD screen require at turn-on vs. how much power is consumed by leaving it on for an hour? What is the break-even point (in minutes)? How much stress on the components is imposed by turning the screen on vs. leaving it on for x minutes? There is a minimum idle period after which it makes more sense to hit the power switch, but to attribute not doing so every time to laziness, is to discount the research done by people who actually think about these things. That being said, the break-even point turns out to be about 71 minutes on the average 15" LCD flat panel. " Interesting. Does anyone know the average "break-even point" for a 19" CRT.

Thank you very much for the link. What an interesting read! As a student I think I've learned a lot about the importance of challenges and allowing myself to make mistakes as I learn.

  7. Interesting Sequels to Sci-Fi Movies on What's Your Favorite Underappreciated Movie? · · Score: 1

After a film is fairly successful, there comes a nice little sequel. Don't get me wrong...some suck. I happen to treasure Short Circuit 2 and Escape From L.A.. They play alot more with the characters in a fun way. Johnny 5 has got great lines. Check out the scene where he dresses up as a Pueto Rican gang member and chants "Los Locos Kick Your A..." :-) Also, I love how Kurt Russell played action hero in Escape From L.A. The joke's on the police force who gives him a pretty scary array of weapons and toys to play with like a nuclear submarine that he crashes. No matter how silly sci-fi can be, there's always some great cult humor for us fans!
