When being asked to switch products, people make the same arguments that you would and for the same reasons.
I had many of the same symptoms you did in college 15 years ago and have only recently figured out the root cause. In my case it was ADD without hyperactivity. I had a hard time concentrating and could get off track by the slightest thing.
What worked for me was to be extremely anal about my environment. The goal was to minimize distractions. That meant a closed door, no books around, headphones on playing classical music, facing a blank wall.
Recently I have also started taking Adderall XR 30 mg. It appears to be working. I used to have some of the same problems, e.g. not being able to resist the tempptation to surf. Now it is much easier for me to focus.
