"We think we are this all powerful force that is going to overrun the earth changing it in ways that it has never changed before."

Well, actually I think the issue is that we are powerful enough to change the Earth in ways that it has been changed before.

So rather than get all political about it, a smarter idea would be to figure out just how our actions do change the Earth, and then avoid changing it in ways we don't want to.

  2. Re:How Does It Explain Human Immunity? on Chimps, AIDS, And Immunity · · Score: 1

What does one have to do with the other? Besides the fact that there is a quote in the article that states What it means is that a cluster of genes in some chimp's immune system was able to create immune cells that could sucessfully defeat the virus. to do this the virus must have non-mutating parts that some immune cells can attack. Some humans could have a similar cluster and this could explain why they appear immune. The point is that the chimp evidence shows that some heritable trait in the primate immune system can defeat the virus in chimps, and given our close relationship to chimps, it is likely that a similar heritable trait exist in humans. Using this information, one can look for a similar cluster in humans, find out what is unique about the immune cells they code for, and ideally get a leg up on creating effective vaccines.

  3. I think never is enough! on Do Long Work Hours Affect Code Quality? · · Score: 1

Put on BNL and tell your boss to stuff it. I've worked on & managed hard up against the deadline projects: always a sign of poor planning on mine or my managers part. But I've _never_ been told or even asked to work longer than 8 hours, the times I've done it is because I cared about the project and getting it done. The times my team has done it has been for the same reasons: loyalty-if I'm not quitting early, they won't. If your boss is actually requesting this of you, he has obviously failed to win your loyalty to the project. The only way I would work longer in such a situtation (where my boss is demanding it rather than my being inspired to volunteer) is for double overtime & I wouldn't feel bad at all demanding it. Such a demand is a sign of poor project planning _and_ poor leadership and the guy should be made to pay for his mistake. If you won't do it for yourself, do it for the other workers & projects he will mess up until he learns his lesson!
