"Of course, by the time you read this, the bug will have been patched.;)"
This is the most significant benefit (to me atleast). In fact, I think that to most people, the biggest of open source is the rapid deployment of bug fixes, patches etc. rather than cheap or free software. Without open source, I'm afraid most of us would be stuck in a world of buggy software that only works when it feels like it.
Oh Wait a minute... What? "Windows has encounterd a problem..."
Anyway, the point is that I have never heard of MS, Oracle, or any of the other major software companies ever having a patch within hours much less days for anything.

Onw would think that a good Java programmer would have at least a foundation in basic C++. Thus the examples should be easy for the Java programmer to understand. It was my experience that as a Java programmer that the GoF book was invaluable, no more so or less so than now when I do all C++ work.
It seems that to produce a design patterns book that is language centric misses the point. They are patterns, they should be able to be implemented in any language, not just the one of the authors choosing.

I think hge meant that the DVD licence was aimed at education. Thus the right to show it publically & the $145 (except from amazon) price tag.
