So, you are saying that redhat and other distros should just go ahead and release their patched versions of firefox (when they have a fix for a security bug) and hope the mozilla organization catches up before their users get hacked?

    No?

Most of the stuff on the page seems to be things apple use more than things they have created. Streaming server and openplay being the obvious exceptions. The list is more a list of projects they have made patches for so it'll also run on their proprietary system.

I've made http://bobs.sf.net and been helping people with debugging, bugreporting, testing on a various projects which include netatalk and cinepaint. Basically I could make a list which would be about the same size.
Given the size of apple, their opensource page is puny in size. But it underlines my point very well.

On a side note. I really wonder how apple is going to survive if IBM succeeds in getting PPC workstations really popular (which of course also depends on getting linux more popular in general). That is in effect the same as the clone wars they already tried in the 90s.

Apple does none of these things. They are innovating, inventing and are really careful about asking people to mind their own business. They want to make their money by selling the best products in a category - Microsoft wants to make their money by being the only company to sell products in every category.
Clearly a false statement. Apple bought Nothing Real (shake) and Silicon Grail to shut down professional compositing apps on other platforms (windows at least) so people would be forced to buy an apple to get a compositing tool. Thankfully Digital Domain started selling their previously in-house app Nuke to the now vacant market. So your apoligist stories are not true. Apple is a greedy corporation that does little more than implementing other peoples ideas when they are not busy suing their fans.
But you are an apple fan so I don't except you to actually know anything.
What open source has apple given back to the world? I can'think of any, but please give a list if you know.

I'm still waiting for something which can replace floppy disks. Will this do it?

Think about it. Nothing is really as useful and standard as the floppy. Easy use, always works, no special drivers, no monopoly.

Will this drive form a new standard? I hope so, but I suspect it will do as Zip drives and the rest. If Phillips probably keeps the standard locked down like the Zip drives, then it will just be another useless Zip drive.

Nice little thing, I hope it makes it :)

I can resize the root windows to be side by side or overlapping. Easy and painless and usually only needs to be done once in a work session.
With macs I don't have a choice to work in a way that works smoothly without too many interface arrangements.
I can use alt-tab fast (in linux/windows). Going to the menu, hiding my current app, selecting to next app is time wasted.
Time is what I want to use working, not clicking through the gui.
A very clear example is browsing the internet on a os-x. Damn. You'll never find that window you had opened amongst the other 20+ windows. It's an absolute nightmare.

I spend a lot more non-productive time on macs than on linux or windows. The mac interface is just designed, not designed for work.
I'm not saying that just using MDI is solving all problems. That still takes a good program gui.
There are countless other stupidies in OS-X.
This desktop mess is just one of them.

I've become very disappointed with OS-X and consider it a toy for home use.

The part about not using MDI style applications is in my opinion _very_ wrong. I often have 3 or more applications open when working and I find it damn confusing to look at all of them at the same time. Ever hit something outside the program you are working in and then spend time finding your way back?
Macs are just crappy to working with if you use more than one program at a time.

The gui is just not designed to let me move around with speed and ease.
Linux and Windows are much better at that.

Bottom line_ Macs are too expensive and slow.
I like my new dual mp 2000+. Cheaper and faster (and it runs linux properly!).
