  1. Yes, and I made a thing to use it in email on Ask Slashdot: Do You Use Markdown and Pandoc? · · Score: 1

At one point I found myself composing some email (started with notes for a conference, then code-heavy email) in Github's editor, rendering, and then pasting into an email. And then I realized that I'm a programmer and can make stuff to do stuff. So I made Markdown Here (or the project page on Github). It's a Chrome/Firefox/Safari/Opera/Thunderbird/Postbox extension that allows you to write email in your normal email editor, but in Markdown, and then render it before sending. It also supports syntax highlighting and some TeX math support. And it works in Google Groups posts, Evernote (web interface) notes, Blogger posts, and so on -- anywhere that uses contentEditable or designMode for the editor (including TinyMCE-based and CKEditor-based ones).

So, yeah, I use Markdown for email. There are about 15,000 Markdown Here users, so I guess they're part of the answer too.

  2. Shameless self-promotion on Alternative to Groove? · · Score: 5, Informative

I'm one of the founders/developers of a product that's an alternative to Groove -- CipherShare. We're a very small company, but the product has been around for about 7 years now, and we have some pretty sizable customers (Bechtel, MDS Sciex).

We have: a very clear, simple interface; zero sensitive data exposure on server (we have a reseller who will host for you, if need be, and won't be able to see your data); support for very large files; secure chat; optional account/password recovery; file-type-agnostic document handling; auto-delta-versioning; etcetera. Check out the site and email us if you'd like a demo (we can host it for you, or you can host it yourself).

Is anyone else reminded of Focus from Vernor Vinge's A Deepness in the Sky? Kind of scary. (If you haven't read the book, then I highly recommend it. Don't worry that's it's a sequel -- or prequel? -- to another book. You really don't need to have read the first one.)

On the other hand, a mild version of Focus might not be so bad. Especially if it were people other than me who it was being done to. (Starting to feel like Pham Nuwen...)

  4. Shameless self-promotion on Securing Files in a Hostile Workplace? · · Score: 1

My company sells (and I work on) a product that meets numbers 1 through 9 of your criteria list (and maybe 10). Here's the website for it: http://www.kastenchase.com/products/acs.asp And here's a PDF brochure that might have less sales noise (maybe): http://www.kastenchase.com/products/CipherShareBro chure_20030729.pdf We could probably also make the source code available for review, and don't yet have two-factor authentication but we plan to add it soon. Sales guys would have to be the ones to make promises like that, though -- I just write the code. It's a damn good product (if I do say so myself), and we have some happy customers. I've personally been using it daily for about two and a half years (since we started developing it).
