  1. Re:The real reason... on Windows 10 Successor Codenamed 'Redstone,' Targeting 2016 Launch · · Score: 1

I have no problem with Linux, have used CentOS and Fedora at home for several years. It's also almost time to seriously consider an Android tablet, because most regular consumer stuff could be done on that platform.

But "most" is the operative word. The real reason I still have one (1) personal Windows box, (not counting the Windows machines I'm required to use at work) is that I make part of my living as a photographer, and the Adobe tools don't work on Linux (or Android) yet. (Oh, Adobe has "tools" that work on Android, but they're toys, not meant for serious work.) The moment they do, I'm gone. Until then, I have to have at least one Winders box in the house.

  3. Fork it. on Microsoft Engineer: Open Source Windows Is 'Definitely Possible' · · Score: 1, Insightful

Let's fork Windows, leaving an official for-pay version, and a separate, open source version using the Linux model. Microsoft could then vet the best of the contributions and fold them back into the closed, for-pay product. Enterprise customers would continue to purchase the official product from Microsoft, because of the perception that contracts for technical support are important, with the majority of new development being taken over by geeks like us.

Pragmatically, an open source fork would be a strong argument to organizations thinking about dropping Windows to stick with it.

I could be wrong on this, but if the studio captioned the film, wouldn't the film be "hard captioned", where the captioning is part of the image, and can't be turned off? I'm aware that technology has gone beyond this, but that doesn't mean the studios have adopted it.

One could say that Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson have done ok since then. Whatever one might think of Natalie Portman's acting chops [1] she has a fairly impressive body of work. Mark Hamill has been extremely busy since Star Wars, albeit often voicework. Carrie pretty much destroyed her career with drugs and alcohol, but managed to come back. As far as Hayden and Jake, enh. I think they both struggled as actors, so no surprise there.

[1] I submit that a lot of the woodenness in the prequels was directly linked to Lucas as a director, and not necessarily reflective of the actors themselves. A good director can get amazing performances out of a poor actor (Stanley Kubrick directing Ryan O'Neal in Barry Lyndon) and a poor director can get a leaden performance out of any actor. (Lucas directing pretty much anyone in any star wars film.) Portman was terrible in all the Star Wars films, but so was pretty much everyone else.

You're right, the website does not clearly have a place to log in -- you have to request a document or initiate a payment in order to get the login screen, wherein you can also create an account. In defense of OP, this may be the reason they did not include a link to a login page -- there doesn't appear to be one.

But to your point, there seems to be a bug in the form, where if you put any punctuation or special characters in the required passphrase, it misreports the issue as a bad password. Taking the exclamation point out of the passphrase caused my password (a different token) to be accepted. For what it's worth, YMMV, etc etc. (This is the government we're talking about...)

Once the process gets going, it's a little *too* straightforward. The information you need to create an account could easily be socially engineered. Current address, age, full name and SS# are all required information on any loan application, for instance. It then checks your records and gives you a multiple choice test for outstanding loans and banking information that you need to answer correctly. Again, all of this is public record. It would take some effort, but creating an account on someone else's SS# is definitely doable.
