I had been using my 56k modem for about 2 years, and i had justed switched to cable modem, and a friend of mine wanted to start using internet so i sold him my 56k modem. When i was trying to install it, it worked fine, but there was just no way to turn off the noise from the modem dialing the connection, so out of frustrating of the terrible noise, i ripped off the little speaker and the modem worked just fine afterwards, no more annoying noise.
Oh, and it was on windows xp...
