  1. GNU/Linux is still usefull after lockdown. on Aussie Uni Dumps Dual-Boot In Favor of Linux · · Score: 2, Informative

That's the difference between a secured Unix system and a 'Windows policy editor lockdowned' system.

In windows you just have to close down all ways to do nasty things. End result : undestroyable but also completely useless pc. Nobody can do anything on it.

With a Unix system, students can't mess around anything BUT they can do whatever they want in their personal enviroment and a Unix box is still a usefull tool without root access.

    giFT anyone ?

giFT has proven to be an extremely reliable program, even though it's CVS only.
Please note that you have to checkout a new version every 3 days orso to be able to connect.

  3. GPL + Commercial on Peercast Source Available · · Score: 5, Interesting

Lately I see more and more companies release their program/product under the General Public License, saying that, if you want to use it in a commercial product you have to buy a commercial license.
I am modestly fond over this practice, but hey, more GPL software is good for everyone !
However some issues arise, say I write a patch for their program, and they incorporate it. If some then buys a 'commercial license' they are selling MY patch under a non Free license...
Furthermore, the FSF has announces an updated GPL in a few months... something tells me that the FSF might be tempted to make this sort of things impossible, since, if you look at it straighly this is a bit fishy.

    Just my 2 cents.

  4. Multiple monitor _are_ better on Multi-Monitors and Increased Development Productivity? · · Score: 1

I'm running my triple monitor setup for over a year now and I can only find one disadvantage : you cant back out, once you're used to it you can't miss it any more.

As a programmer myself I find it easy to have an editor in the middle, to the left the console where I test/debug, and the other side for man pages

Multimonitor really comes to life on GNU/BSD if you use an X server with xinerama support, then you monitors are counted as 1 big screen.

Or, don't use Xinerama, and see Gnome and KDE running next to each other.
If you hook up 2 keyboards and 2 mouses, you can use 1 pc with two people at the same time even !

Setting it up is fairly easy, the painfull part is finding a combo of cards that work smoothly together.
Matrox is god in this area, the provide multihead cards with excellent quality, AND you can use multiple multihead cards without a problem.

I think 4 monitors is about the maximum anyone can handle...

  5. Doesn't any READ ? on OpenBSD Gains Privilege Elevation · · Score: 4, Informative

    It's not a bug, it's a feature !

For example the Apache webserver, it needs to be started as root, in order to bind to port 80. Now this is no longer required, since a call to the new function will allow it to bind to 80 as an regular user, provided that the syscall is configged to allow that.

Same goes for X, which now no longer needs to be run SUID.

It probably won't be long before these mechanism is common good, but I wonder what happens if someone finds an exploit in THAT ?

  6. Open source... on Sun Releases Open Source Tool for Project Liberty · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yes, this is open source software, but can anyone explain me the difference between a no-go commercial application and this, except that you have the 'source' ?

As I read in the license it's still 'Intellectual Property bla bla', 5 lines thereafter they define 'Commercial Use'...

What we need is Free Software, not crappy I-wanna-be-cool-but-am-GPL-scared software.

To me this is no better than (oh-the-horror) Microsoft Word
