were we mislead by Nature? Nature is more than just a magazine, it is a scientific journal. If the claims of cutting and pasting are correct, it is extremely irresponsible and we may as well stop reading Nature and spend more time on People.
Nature was not just a magazine, although now we have to re-evaluate.
not that it could change the weather, currents and really mess everything up. The really scary thing is that a bribe and a lobbyist could ensure that, if it is developed, it gets used by someone somewhere.
Stopping the bad ideas is one of our (yep - us, everyone because when its all done we let it happen) biggest problems.
The massive cost of textbooks is quite inflated. Order of magnitude reductions in textbooks costs
have been shown to be possible if authors', editors' and publishers' royalties are reduced. This project
FHSST has made massive progress to that end and will produce books for less than $3 per
book. The first book should be out in 2006.
Books shouldn't be replaced, they should form an integral part of the teaching process.
GFDL and DSL content?
Its a great idea iff its a precursor for a broader free content search. Perhaps I am being too optimistic.
Would be nice though...
I tried using it and IMHO wait a bit - unless you want to start everything from scratch. Most of my presentations are a mess when I import, though I was using StarOffice 7.0.
I have had issues with slideshow offsets, font sizes, textbox positioning etc. Things have improved dramatically since the 1.9.6x tags but I would say if you don't mind helping out submitting bug reports go for it.
I am still making everything I really need elsewhere and just playing with OOo2.0(1.9.79-1) at the moment.
But it is coming along very nicely - its just _really_ still a beta.
These problems are largely caused by the fact that the worst influences of the west (i.e. oil demands, modern weaponry) entered a largely uneducated, tribal society.
The AIDS problem can only be solved through education of future generations - this is crucial. ARVs will not solve Africa's issues but hopefully can keep things functioning long enough to raise a well educated generation.
Corruption, violence etc. must be eradicated through raising well educated generations in peaceful environments.
Southern Africa has achieved relative stability - now is the time for decisive education.
Education intiatives are crucial for any sustainable development in Africa (and boy do we need it!). Now that Southern Africa has finally exhausted its supply of wars a bloc of (relatively) stable countries has formed.
The Shuttleworth Foundation Education division is supporting a large number of small projects (which is good in that they are community based and best able to respond to the needs of their community) but given that many intiatives have overlapping needs (for example educational content) why don't you start a small undertaking to improve coordination between the initiatives you support?
Combining projects would just create an administrative mess but there are alternative ways.
For example one project (I am unashamedly gonna plug my own project http://www.nongnu.org/fhsst ) could produce the core content which would make the situation significantly easier for other projects. A large pool of resources could be created.

Its a free high school science textbook project, and I think its the way to go - but then its my project
I am not very clued up on US law but is there a short answer to the following question:
Why can't IBM rapidly get a court to rule on issues like the fact that SCO won't disclose the code etc.
Is there a (good) reason why it must drag on for a long time?
Basically is there no quick ruling that could nip this all in the bud?

because the people with good ideas often aren't the ones implementing ideas ... so sad ... if only we could cull.
Lets hope for the best - we can control where all the category 5 hurricanes go!!!! Then we'd really have a chance of harnessing some REAL power!
But they are relevant objections, aren't they?

The use of linux and thin clients has been very effective in rural Namibia. More than 250 schools have been connected and an infractstructure of free educational websites exists. Its a little sparse at the moment but improving. Access to decent education sites actually can help students and teachers who lack resources. With linux you don't need the latest and greatest hardware to enable the masses. I support these projects because education is the one way we can break the cycle of violence that engulfs Africa. The whole of Southern Africa is peaceful now and starting to develop (believe it or not!).
