  1. Re:Get your resume together on Sharing IT Problems with Executives? · · Score: 1

Nice comment! If I had any moderator points they would get blown on this post!

The only thing I could add would be to suggest that IF it is a problem where someone has simply neglected to fix it, that the choice has already been made, all you would be doing would be truthfully answering a question. Odds are that the management already suspects something could be running better or they would not have called the meeting.

I had resisted addressing this as it involves making a product pitch, but; check out the newer printer offering form EPSON. Namely, the R300 ($179) through the 960 ($249) models have been given the ability to print directly to a compatible CD/DVD disk using dye sublimation ink. So far, the contacts I still have with the program are reccomending the Maxell disks (white face) for use with these products, but theoretically, any white-faced disk should work.

The printers are all fully-functional photo printers which are shipped with an adapter whoose only function is to keep the disk still through the print cycle.

After doing a stint as a printer rep I learned that the main reason that bulk CD printing is done by a silkscreen-type method is (apart from cost) is that mechanically applied CD labels have a tendancy to throw off the balance of the CD itself as it rotates.

Granted, (again from many hours with our tech staff) this is a much rarer problem these days as the drives have developed a higher error tolerance to rotational flutter. Just something to keep in mind when evaluating the failure tests.

  4. Re:Hypocrites. on Symantec Says No To Pro-Gun Sites · · Score: 1

If you really believe the outcry is due to laziness, then I would like to hear (or rather read) how you believe that a valid site for the promotion of gun freedoms could exist without a full and frank discussion of weapons, their justifiable and unjustifiable uses, and the results/effects of their use. By your statements, the first two points would be fair game as exclusionary triggers for a filtering program.

While it is true that keyword filtering is the easiest and quickest way to get a usable product, it challenges credibility to an astounding degree to suggest that during one of the QA processes at Symantec that someone could not have realized that the filters would erroneously block such sites as the main NRA page and the NRA-ILA (National Rifle Association-Institute for Legislative Action for those who do not know). Both of which are key sources for education about gun rights, laws, and safety.

The argument is not so much over whether or not this is a dumb error as it is over the idea that this should be something blazingly obvious and easy to avoid.

Any competent user (yes, I know) sdould be able to figure out how to block such sites on their own should their convictions so dictate either by reading the manual or placing a quick call to the support desk. While I find that intellectually dishonest, fine; go for it! Our right to freedom of expression mandates no right to be heard. As this audience should well know, ideas will find their audience or perish. It is for the listener alone to make the choice as to appropriateness, correctness and acceptability.

The irony is that the idea just will not die. NASA has been working for years (in conjunction with Boeing and Lockheed-Martin) on a SSRT (Single Stage Rocket Technology) craft that would be able to serve as a high volume transcontinental transport for passengers and cargo.

The size of the library and the "relative" ease of installation of the games "out there" mean that for the forseeable future, I will by buiding my game boxes with Windoze.

For my day-to-day work, you will find me on a Linux (currently RH9) or BSD (FreeBSD 4.0) box until I can afford to order my dream Apple machine.
