Guess I'd have to wonder what you would consider an indication of long term success. Grammy hall of fame membership is likely a lot more accolades than you have garnered in your chosen profession. I'll have a cheeseburger and a strawberry shake.
Several artists with a relatively large audience base have made this move and have seen positive results, artistically and financially. John Prine, Ani DeFranco, Van Morrison, Jerry Douglas and (I believe) Tom Waits are some of the folks who have decided to enter the market unescorted by major label names.
There are probably more that I'm not aware of.
Of course retail distribution is geared toward the big boys, but there are other distribution methods, ie Internet marketing.
