"Austin was arrested with other protesters at the World Economic Forum in New York in February 2002 on charges of disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly. "

WTF are you talking about? Oh yeah, you didn't RTFA. [snip] He wasn't just preaching.. he was practicing what he preached. Therefore, he posed a REAL threat, not a virtual one.

It has become increasingly difficult to practice our freedom of peaceful protest, so don't be so quick to write this guy off as a "real threat".

I was at the WEF protest in NYC, too. Cops were turning some people away from the protest, pinning other people behind barricades and not letting them leave the protest, packing hundreds into some pens while leaving other pens with only a handful of people. Numerous people who disagreed were arrested. One cop nearly pushed me over when he hit me in the back with his club when I stopped to ask another cop for directions (politely) as we were leaving. . .

This could put Ashcroft in a pickle.

People who participate actually stand to make money, it isn't just a "fantasy" game for international affairs experts. So if this is allowed, why can't I gamble with a sports book on the internet? The DOJ has been cracking down on this in the last few years.

We shouldn't be surprised by the hypocrisy, though, governments have allowed all kinds of gambling that benefit them ( lotteries, regulated casinos ) while at the same time banning gambling outlets they have no control over.

But they won't be in Kansas, they'll be in Missouri. . .

There is both a Kansas City, Kansas and a Kansas City, Missouri (the one in Missouri is the "real" one). Avila University is in Kansas City, Missouri. Maybe they need to change it to MFest. . .

Dogs and cats ALREADY serve humans after being trained using known reinforcement techniques

Exposing the animal's brain and forcing it to lead a life with a metal skullcap bolted to its skull is quite different than teaching fido to fetch and using treats as reinforcement.

No service dog is ever inflicted with pain to train it. Handlers/trainers bend over backwards to create a loving, caring environment for their animals. When the rescue dogs were searching the WTC ruins, they had to plant people in the rubble so the dogs could find them, all so the dogs wouldn't get too depressed and stop looking.

Just because animals can't speak up (with language, that is, I'm sure the rats made their displease known in many other universal ways that were ignored) this doesn't mean that we're free to mutilate them as we see fit. I applaud the fact that we're using technology to aid in disaster situations, but I just find it really twisted that we're forcing all these animals to suffer for it. Say what you will about rats being cheap, they're still living, intelligent beings that don't deserve to be fitted with skull caps and have their brains shocked. If you don't see any problem with the rats, how far away are we from doing this with cute, cuddly puppies or kittens?

  6. Step away from the computer! on New Technology for Digital Democracy · · Score: 2, Insightful
God forbid we get up form our computers to work for something we believe in. E-mail campaigns don't work because they're easy, anyone with the slightest interest can take five minutes to forward a form letter. Handwritten letters, phone calls, and LIVE protests show that people are willing to give up free time, get arrested and spend time organizing, thus showing that the issue is more than just a passing interest.

What gets more press for your cause, e-mailing the IMF or trying to shut-down DC by sitting in the streets? It doesn't matter what you delieve in (right, left, whatever), effort and personal sacrifice gets the word out, sitting at home on your ass does not.
