As I said in my notes, of course this is not the entire story. Microsoft's business practices were a major factor too. But the development story of Netscape's development recounted in the Cusumano/Yoffie book is nevertheless a sobering tale, well worth reading in my opinion.
You misread my comment about platform independence. Of course it's a good thing, but it doesn't come easily.
