Actually, the one in the park is one of the atmospheric test models that was never intended to go into space. The one that went into space was sitting in a hanger that collapsed some years ago, damaging the orbiter.
There was an article about the whole program in the December 2002/January 2003 issue of Air & Space Magazine.
But we don't know that it's a barren icy wasteland. Based on what we can see from here, we think it might be a barren icy wasteland, but we don't know that for sure.
