  1. Re:Why not Portland? on Linuxfest Northwest · · Score: 1
What's Bellingham got? As mentioned before, Bellingham has the core team of organizers and a free venue. If there are enough volunteer organizers, an appropriate venue free of charge, and enough exhibitor interest, there would be no problem switching to a different metro area, but as it stands the only way we can afford to do this is by holding it at a location that's provided free of charge.

Also, one of the big appeals of this event is the "grassroots" nature of it. That's really what has drawn the impressive list of names to the event, and we're reluctant to impact that element.

Of all the attendees and exhbitors, there's sure to be more than a few guys who are reading this. If it can be done by Saturday morning it will done.

We'll be recording Maddog's speech, and I'm sure there will be a few video cameras around. Someone will probably edit together a video of the event. I hear Windows Movie Maker is great for that kind of thing!

There are a few reasons for Bellingham, not the least of which is facilities cost. Esentially, we get the venue and a phenomenal amount of on-site support in exchange for providing some publicity for the school. Also, most of the core organizers are Bellingham locals. This is a yearly thing and our first attempt at getting other LUG's involved. We've talked about moving to a more centralized location, but it depends on a lot of factors which include things like the level of interest of other lugs, the amount of vendor response, etc.
