I personally believe that mines should be banned, and a perfectly good treatly was passed by many of the worlds countries, unforutinatly, the US did not sign it. At first this would seem like a stupid, irrational move on the part of the American. However, the Americans were perfectly willing to sign, grated one exemption until around 2005 for landmines planted around the demilliterized zone at the korean boarder. These landmies protect the 20,000+ american soldiers still stationed in South Korea, after a cease fire ended UN involement there. North Korea is very unstable, with a much larger army then the Americans stationed their. Unforutunatly, because several of the people involved in this treaty were in line for a Nobel prize, they decided not to grant any exemptions, and the US did not sign the treaty.
First depleted uranium shells are not bombs, uranium is used because it is very dense and can puncture other metal, it never explodes.
Second, everything about maniputation of the press in Yugoslavia is just hearsay. I know a journalist that was in Yugoslavia, and he personally saw many of the horrors, mostly commited on the Albainians, but not exclusivly. The vast majority of false "atrocity" were by Milosovics government, who were sending bus's over target bridges continuosly, they know the best way to fight the US is through the American media. I do not know anything about the *illegal* cluster bombs, however i would like to know who declared them *illegal*, and if the United States signed the treaty
It seems that so many people here are so concentrated on american bashing that they can ignore the actual facts and only look at conspericy theories. I guess it is just a case of the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, but if the United States really used its special forces extensivly for illegal operations, I have a feeling Sadam Hussian would have been assainated a long time ago.
If you take time and look at these events from a unbiased viewpoint you would look back at yourself and see someone who is very "naive", however so would someone who believes everything the government or CNN say. If you do, you will see that most of the people who say other are sheep, really are themselves sheep. I really wish that would forget their biases and look at everything objectivly, but i can't see it happening soon.
Oh well, i don't even think any of this should bother me, i'm Canadian

It really is sad the state has to take responsibillity for children, but it is something that needs to be done. There are just to many neglectful parent who will not protect their children, that it is now nessary. Unforntuanatly this makes it harder for the many good parents out there to make decisions in what they feel is the best interest of their child. That is one on the fundumental problems all societies face, protection vs. freedom.
Personally, this legistation does not bother me (although that might be different if i had to spend thousands of dollars and change my site). It seems to do a decent job of protecting people, without taking much freedom away from parents. The only problem that i have is that by age 16, most kids are able to make an informed decision on whether or not to submit personal information, and they should be able to without problem.
No, i'm sure that he will push linux, not specificly redhat. Saying "Redhat is the best linux" means nothing to people because they have never used it. On the other hand, if you say "linux is much better than Windows", then it means something. Redhat is also aware that at least for now, people like us are their main market, and they know how easy it is to lose our support. They will not do anything to upset us, at least not now, and most likely never. It will probalely be a represnetitive of redhat talking about linux. Of course this will help Red Hat, but it will not be aimed only at "Red Hat Linux". I think we should all be just a little less cynical.
The oil and gas sector is what made Calgary what it is today. I have worked for oil firms since graduating cs at the UofC. Without it we would be a slightly warmer version of winnipeg.

First off in Canada the conservitive views are actually more liberal (confusing, but it should make sense). Of course we have oil money, but thats not why we have such conservitive(eg right wing economics) views. In fact in the west our conservitism is more based on freedom then tradtion, and is thus far more liberal on the ture political system. We want freedom and democracy. We do not want to be told what hospital to go to, or what daycare our children should attend (public daycare, not here, but comming).
As far as a tech town, Calgary is one of the best in Canada, this is because of our low taxes, the only problem is that the US is still lower. When us Calgarian are pushing for a less representitive system of government, then the negitivly toned conservitives.
I think that the best way for this problem to be solved, would be for a government agency to obtain a code breaking computer, and operate it publicly. It would require a warrent to use. Then they could encourge the use of strong crypto, at least dommesticly. Internatioally would be a bigger problem, but it the millitary operated simillar machines in the public eye, it may work.
The problem with this is that it would require the NSA to admit they have the technology to crack strong crypto (granted that they can, but with their budget and personal, it seems likely). It would also stir up many paranoid people, who would only see it as more evidence that their being watched.
I know many paranoid people would consider this even worse, i think that it would be a huge step forward. I would hate to see a child molester get off because he encrypted the photos that he took and then just got rid of the key.

The coldest time recorded i believe was in the mid 1850's. The net difference since 1850 is several degrees, but i doubt its that significant compared to the last 10,000 years. It is possible that in 100 years there may be fear of global cooling (guess who the enviromentalists will blame that on).
The global warming is happening, however nobody has yet proven it is a result of industrialization, its just environmentalists have made you believe this.
We have to reduce pollution, but we shouldn't do it in a knee jurk reaction to "global warming" at the cost of many peoples jobs.

Slave labor? So their being forced to work for nothing at all? I am completely against child labor, and the poor working condition, but these workers are not slaves.
