Actaully - I have always found the MS windows media player to be far better that the QuickTime Player, and the virus that is know as RealPlayer.
But, hey, that is my opinion.
Well gettinng up is not the hardest part of getting to orbit.. it is getting down again whithout turning your craft and occupants into a huge ball of plasma.
Due to the nature of things - you could spend several hours building up enough energy to sustain orbit - but, only have a few minutes (relativly) on the way back down to get rid of all the energy.
The biggest issue is going to be the heatshield systems....
The point is that sometimes you have to put the bible in context of when it was written and what time it was written.
Using the language and average knowledge of the time of 2000 years ago - explain the development of the modern computer and how it works... you just can't do it..
I have had to deal with the question of creationsim and evoultionism on an almost daily basis with my peers. As a "young" christian just starting out on his journey with God through life, I have had to place things into perspective. I have had to read what the bible says on certain subjects, examine the physical evidence and form conclusions that add up (in a common sense way) to statisfy my intellecualy curosity.
I don't know if God created a "living software program" in the form of DNA, which when placed on the earth when it was created, was the basis of all life on earth. Or, if God created all of the "ancestor" organisms, from which all the diversity of life evolved from. However, I do know that the process of evoluion exists and that in fact there is _no_ difference between macro and micro evolution. If you are willing to belive one form then you have to belive the other because the process are the same.
Everybody's relationship with God is different. Everybody has there own little things they need to work out, but the one belive reamins the same... God created the universive and put into process all of the things that we scientifcally see today. We just don't know the details of how God did it.. but then if we did know - if wouldn't be called Faith.

However - if you are interested in discussing any of the areas that I have talked about - or in fact about any part of the Christian Faith. I will certainly do my best to answer your questions; but I won't be able to explain everything; and in fact I still have areas which I struggle with, but hey I am not perfect after al:)

You can build multi terabyte capacity systems for a few thousand bucks...
Storage of video isn't and issue. 500-800KBps WM9 at SIF res is good enough for tv..
So the system that tapes eveything that isn't on disk is not "bullshit". The company that I work for builds hardware for the broadcast industry that is designed to do such things.
Come on guys... Linux is no more secure than windows, the only reason that it doesn't suffer as many attacks as windows platfors, is due to the fact that is at the bottom of the use OSes list (Windows = most used, mac = second, linux = third).
When I saw the news about the proof on concept, I knew people would be bitching about the fact that it was a MS product...
However, I am sure all you linux zelots out there know that the _first_ smartphone virus was written targeting the sybiam 60 OS.. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06/15/symbian_vi rus/
Just a few facts of the real world: 1) The idea of bug free software is a myth 2) All software deveopement is commerically driven in one form or another (even OpenSurce software, just the reward for writting the software is different) and finally 3) Linux is just another operating system, it is not going to save the world, cure cancer, topple the Bush administration (or Blair depending on who you like), or get rid of Microsoft.
I know I am opening a can of worms here, but please bear with me.
This thread seems to highlight the major problem with the whole OpenSource ethos... In the real world, people rip you off left, right, and center. So the only way to protect your IP is not to give away for free. If you release your source code under the GPL, be prepared for other people to use as the "basis" of their code. Either leaving unchanged in their software, or replicating the functionailty.
If you want people to have the ability to use your software in there one software, I feel a better way is to release compiled binaries, and say "Hey - you can use this for $0, but just put an aknowledgement in your about or program credits.. if you want the source code send me an email and we can discuss why you feel you need access to the code..."
As a developer I am certainly gratefull for people who release the packages for $0 and don't require any royalty payments; and yes.. I have looked and code released under the GPL to figure out how similer problems were solved. However, due to the fact that I have bills to pay and beer to drink.. I find it difficult in understanding why _anyone_ would give away their IP for nothing.
The fact that people use your code and you don't even get a "thank you" highlights the major failings with the whole OpenSource/GPL issue.
Thaks for the links to the GPL stuff (I will read them)..
Some interesting comments on OpenSource stuff should work, but alas, in the real world there are alot of people who want something for nothing.
It is my belief that the source to a package is "worth" alot more than the package itself. I.e I spend 50 hours writting something, I'll sell the compiled code for $10 a pop, but the source code at $5000. Personally, I design and write software because I enjoy it, and don't really mind if people don't pay for the compiled code.
I don't go out looking for copyrighted work just to re-badge and encorperate stright into my code. I have, in the past, gotten stuck on a problem and looked at other people's OpenSource code to try and get a better understanding of how they solved similer problems. Does that put me in violation of the GPL?? (possibily a gray area).
My personal view points go along the lines that GPL/OpenSource is a nice in terms of information sharing and research; but I still stand by the opionin that in the "real" world OpenSource won't be able to have a sustained existance due to the pure fact that you are giving away the source code. Which, I belive, is the most valuble part of any software package.
However - back to the point of the whole story.. if LinkSys and Cisco are indeed in violation then they should either release the code, pay a license, or (more propable) re-write the sections to conform to a closed-source development practice. After all if software development was easy there would be 6 billion developers in the world...
My $0.02:)
This is probably going to open a can of worms, but here goes....
Having never read the GPL license stuff, but if I have a closed source software, and use some open source "bits" that have been distributed under GPL, can't I just encapsulated the GPL stuff in a library and give the source to the library, and not the complete source to the software.
My personal feelings towards OpenSource software, is that is it is good for research and academics, but I find it difficult to understand how a person can earn money by releasing the source to the software. (Now if it is ok by the GPL to pay for the exe and the code, then that would a different story)
I get the impression that OpenSource software is becomming analyous to Free (as in beer) software. We all have to earn a living to afford all of the gadgets we love so much..
Boy I am going to get flamed something bad here.. Well here goes...
It is well and good to recognise the need for competition and intellectual development.... But....
How do you get paid for producing OpenSource software? By definition, you give the source code away, so there is no incentive for a customer to pay for the software.
Also what is point of a system setup if you can't read the latest Word format document that all your customers send you??
As a software developer both privately and professionally I can't afford to release my source code, and I can't afford to waste valuable time developing for an OS that Joe Public can't use (no offence, but you have to admit that Linux is not a real good candidate for replacing Windows on the Desktop, it is just to complex to use out of the box).
I understand where you are coming from, I am sick to the back teeth of MS releasing a new OS every two years, and then trying to force the development community to use their own language (C#)...
But.. as the something like 90% of the world's pc run an MS OS, can a company/country really start ditch MS completely.
As a final thought - if you are a student wanting to go out and work of a high-tech company who is most likely to be using a Windows based OS, and MS applications.. What are you going to spend most of your time learning...? (It sure as hell is going to be CPM:)
People hack their Tivo's to go "Broadcast flag - very nice - I'll ignore that and record it anyway"..
Same for Myth TV etc
