But then again, he uses IE as an example of a program that has gotten rid of the evil quit option, and AFAIK, I don't think IE really follows this principal - it never really does quit: if Windows is running, then IE is too. But at least it pretends to quit when you close the last window.
I really don't understand this. IE has done nothing of the sort. They just renamed 'Exit' in the File menu to 'Close'. Each IE windows is still an app instance. You still have to close it. It doesn't 'autoclose' or anything. Yes, it's kind of built into the shell. But if you visit a webpage from Explorer, hence switching to IE, guess what.... you then have to close that window.
There isn't a problem with the ability to skin as such. The problem is when an app's creator(s) gets SO obsessed with this that it's no longer to view the application in 'default' mode. It does happen... i'd suggest looking at Windows Media Player as an example. Used to have a nice, simple interface, and now it's very bloated, much of which is due to 'skinning'. Frankly most of the skins with WMP are total shite and not worth looking at, they're not very intuative. Yes, there's a 'skin' which puts WMP back to how it looked before ('Classic'), but it's not quite the same, and the program code is still bloated as hell.
Problem: Undo only works in the current application's instance. So, if you mess up your document, exit out, and go back in, you've lost it. The autosaved file would have to include undo information, which could massively increase its size... better for the user to specify when and what they wish to keep a permenant copy of.
Hmm. If the effect they want is for no one to update their hosts file until their server restarts, in order not to overload the root servers, surely the best method would be to 'silently' change the root IP and not tell anyone?
I am all for snooping on foreign nationals because our constitution technically only protects citizens, but to carry this over to everyday US citizens is treading on dangerous ground.
I think we can all learn a lot from someone who has such strong moral fibre.
You said it yourself - airplanes are almost public transport over there, they're so widely used. And London/Edinborough is INCREDIBLY expensive over here. I remember my dad saying, when he went to Scotland for his holiday and back, it was so expensive that they would take a car if he ever did it again... for one person, it was bad enough, for 2, the train was much more expensive than to drive it. In the UK.
And also as you said, the US metro systems are pretty good. Although I do like London Underground:-)
Gas isn't inherently more valuable in Europe. You too could have 1.40$ gas if you invested in the supply and delivery infrastructure and didn't tax the bejeesus out of your gas.
Yup.
In the USA, gas *must* be that cheap, or the economy collapses. Think I'm joking? We don't use rail to move goods here, we use long haul trucking and jets.
Funny. So do we (in the UK). That's why our haulage firms are getting beaten on price by haulage firms coming over *from the continent*. Of course our government are now introducing measure to tax the hell out of them too, so that's ok.
A large percentage of the population drives over 30 miles each way to work.
Many people here drive into the city, or 'commute', on a daily basis.
a nickel rise in the cost of a gallon means a similar rise in the price of ALL GOODS in the local store.
It's not like we don't use haulage firms over here to transport goods.
In Europe, where you can burn enough local coal to power your electric genereators and zoom around your city centers in electric mass transit,
'Mass transit' in the UK is a joke. It's probably BETTER in America.
transport by car is practically a luxury,
TRANSPORT is practically a luxury; the hell I have to go through to get to a nearby town every day is ridiculous.
and your government is happy to let you deal with $5.37 a gallon because you won't vote them out of office for it.
If only that were the case. A combination of EU regulations and lack of choice of decent governments mean that we could never get the tax on fuel back down. NO party that we ever vote in will lower the taxes again. This country's transport system sucks.
Sorry about the rant, I just have strong feelings on this issue.
Come on. You might have some pieces of paper on your desktop (what comes up first when you load Windows?), but you surely dont keep ALL your files there, you keep them stored in a folder system if you still have a paper office. What more do you want from a computer file system? They seem to be as advanced as they need to be, as far as I can see; if you can't use them now, you never will be able to.
Didn't you hear the news? The Republicans and Democrats are both subsiduaries of BigBusiness now. The only way America isn't doomed is for it to have another revolution.
Actually, damn good point. The Wintel strategy of requiring an 'upgrade cycle' (new hardware) every few years instead of coding more efficiently probably doesn't do the environment any good, besides the consumers.
I believe the traditional language spoken on Slashdot in English. I can just about put up with 5 letter acronyms, but what the FUCK are you talking about here?
Although it is perhaps redundant to display "CD audio" with a 100% bar and then put a little legend at the bottom stating "CD: the most copied medium"...... especially when software and games come on CDs too.
It does depend a lot on what you're used to earning, and how much monetary value you place on your personal time. I personally wouldn't value the 'burning' time for music at anything CLOSE to $3, far less. But I am a student. If CDs were cheaper, I'd buy them not for economic reasons, but moral ones.
Now, 20 years later (give or take a decade) you still see videos in ads, but you don't get the videos.
It's a bit much to expect them to include the videos on AUDIO CDs. However, get the DVD version (if there is one - i'm not sure how common they are?) I recently got a DVD album of Louise's (one of the sexiest women on Earth) greatest hits. I already had the CD but bought the DVD as well - why? Had all the videos on it, in high SVCD quality:-) Very good buy.

My backup plan is to toss the entire name space into my local hosts file.
Your backup plan for what? If there was a global nuclear and biological war?
Don't quite get what you mean by 'recursive' here?
Whaddyaknow?! It works.

Yes, you need to be somewhat educated in order to speak proper English
Erm, I think you just stated the root of the problem.
Actually, to give you some idea of what Americans do whine about, here's a conversion:
Assuming it costs us 75p per litre (it's been known to be in the 80p region before), that's $5.37 per gallon. And some Americans complain about $1.40.
Didn't you hear the news? The Republicans and Democrats are both subsiduaries of BigBusiness now. The only way America isn't doomed is for it to have another revolution.
I suspect Didion will be invoicing Slashdot in due course.
Actually, damn good point. The Wintel strategy of requiring an 'upgrade cycle' (new hardware) every few years instead of coding more efficiently probably doesn't do the environment any good, besides the consumers.
TAANSTAAFL.
I believe the traditional language spoken on Slashdot in English. I can just about put up with 5 letter acronyms, but what the FUCK are you talking about here?
Aint nowt you can do w'a computer that ya can't do w'an abacus.
we're at least at where even SUV owners have embedded in their minds somewhere that such gas guzzling is not the best idea.
Judging by the whining of most Americans when the price of their fuel goes up about $0.0001/gallon, I wouldn't go that far.
Although it is perhaps redundant to display "CD audio" with a 100% bar and then put a little legend at the bottom stating "CD: the most copied medium"... ... especially when software and games come on CDs too.
But eventually I am certain will be plenty of $1 songs, and that the artists will be better off
There are plenty of $1 songs now; compiled together onto a $15 album.

Actually, friend, you spend considerably more than five minutes every day doing things like brushing your teeth and going to the bathroom.
... /me shivers at the thought of your room.....
Hey - speak for yourself, ok? I'm too busy for that kinda stuff
Really? I'm 'here in the UK', and have never bought any CDs with vids on them, just that DVD. Then again, I don't buy that many CDs.
Now, 20 years later (give or take a decade) you still see videos in ads, but you don't get the videos.
:-) Very good buy.
