Sci-Fi sometimes influenced programmers in the way they named their products. For example it is probable that the "Hardware Abstraction Layer", a major part of microsoft windows NT's kernel, was named by reference to H.A.L., the computer in "2001 A space odyssey".
It's quite funny that in the movie, HAL was named by reference to IBM (one letter before at each position, I -> H, B -> A,...) so in fact the Microsoft "Hardware Abstraction Layer" is a kind of reference to IBM too;)
