My point exactly. I would rather be tried with a judge that knows he/she doesn't know and says so, then one who thinks they knows. At least you may have grounds for an appeal.
This time I will express a view (that I believe is informed as I am a power system engineer)
All I know is that a lot of the energy saving tips the media frequently puts out: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6636521.stm [bbc.co.uk] are idiotic. Partly because many of them are unworkable (how much power does turning off your broadband connection really save? Seriously? I could run my home router for a year on the power my water heater uses in half an hour.) But mostly because they don't know how generating capacity works... we need enough generators online for peak load, regardless of whether your broadband router is turned off or not. As long as all those generators are running to meet peak load, you're burning the exact same amount of fuel and releasing the exact same amount of carbon.
I rationalise the leaving of my electronic equipment on in that I give up showers every second day while between contracts and as long as my wife lets me.
Cut down on ten percent of your travel and start to walk to work (instead of taking car, as if you use public transport it is hard to directly justify). Althout if you put the money daved on public transport towards insulating home or buying energy saving devices that are not yet economically justifiable, the rationalisation works.
I am always baffled when within the same "newsday" and even sometimes on the same page in the newspaper, there will be an article about CO2 emmissions being bad and alongside, one complaining about the price of electricity/gas being to high or celebrating a drop in energy prices. I can't wait for the "peak oil" day to arrive and the supply contraint starting to drive the energy price, as oppposed to the oil cartels opperations doing the same now.
I hate working from home, but I love living near my workplace.
Slow down folk. Aren't we confusing the ability of the judge to learn technical concept versus some knowledge he/she may already have gleaned from sites such as this.
What is "effing" SCARY is the response from the/. community.
Here are a bunch of "self appointed" experts telling the Law what they should do. ( I am not a lawyer btw). What the/. community should be up in arms about is the reporting in the original article. It is a disgrace that as supposidly impartial, inquisitive and not bigoted individuals we are not seeking out what has transposed in the court prior to the simple request to CLARIFY; "What is a web site?" Place yourselves in the dock. Presumably (yeah right!) INNOCENT until proven guilty, and seeking a fair trial. What would you prefer? A.- A judge who has the proven AND currently demonstrable abilty to grasp technical concepts AND open minded AND able to understand THE LAW as written (AND not as he/she would like it to be written). B.- The contrary of "A".
You want to add something useful and help the community learn. THEN, go research how the law defines "The Web", "Web Forums", "Chat Rooms", etc. then add some positive critique of the definitions, and demand the journalists publish the full and non sensationalised story (even on low news days).
I would like to accuse journalists of subverting the truth and then have them tried by a judge of type "B" (as defined above)
My ohter predjudices, to stop people jumping to conclusions: I prefer not to use M$ products. I am a new MAC user and loving it. I send people documents in as rtf, and hassle them to return same or similar, and most importantly not in M$ propietry format.
The wrist watch started life as a bulky dangly thing on a fob chain.
Much later some OOS developer (swiss I think but not to sure) said, enough! "This damn thing should be worn as a garment". So much so that you can wear it for days without looking at it except when you forget what day of the week it is.
Later came all sorts of devices like PCs, cell phones, video players, digital camaras, portable entertainment units that attempted to knock the modest old wrist wathc off its perch as the timepeice of chioce. I haven't seen it happen yet. Those who want to make a statement about their wealth or social standing can choose between a Rolex or a Timex.
Bill it won't be long before the "wrist watch" knocks your media player and cell phone of their perch, heck why not go the full hog and take on the PDA also. And whats more I don't give a toss what OS or brand of memory resides in my wrist watch, but I do get a bit of a kick when people notice the "badge". Down the track I do not expect the MS badge is really me. I want something that says cultured, sophisticated rebel. Yeah that will do.
Sure the interface to these old things we used to call portable Xs (replace X the likes of phone, media player, etc), will be scattered around the place, one at home, one in the car, one in the breifcase (if they are still fashionable). Woman will have an advantage here as they will just have one foldaway visual interface if they don't like wearing their visual interface implanted in the lense of their sunglasses./n
In the meantime my iPod is just fine, sound good, phots are OK, but what the heck it impresses people I don't like and thats the main thing isn't it. I will keep it for "retro" purposes in 20 years. My grand-kids my think it is cute, even if a bit "vitriolic". (if you are over 45 you may understand what vitriolic really means). Bonne Journée.
