I've been able to do that because I'm a Linux user, it would have worked for BSD etc. too.

I have a 10-year-old Mac running an older version of MacOS. I'd still have an 8-year old XP machine if the hard drive hadn't crapped out. It's nice that Linux continues to be updated for older hardware, but you can certainly keep an old Mac/PC running for a long time.

(You can also have a pancreas that does not work well, but that is not the mechanism being discussed.)

As the article you linked suggests, what good would a fix do? The whole reason that someone might still be running 4.3 or below is that the phone manufacturers do not push updates. Google could fix 4.3 and below, but the manufacturers are no more likely to push that update than they are to just push a higher (and thus supported) version. The vast majority of people installing their own firmware aren't going to cry over 4.3, either. Why install a custom ROM with an obsolete Android?

People tell me about a good show and I'll get around to watching it eventually.

Sports is another matter. I'm not a huge sports fiend, but it would be nice to catch a game now and then. As it is, I can only watch the broadcast games. I would probably pay them if they would take my money, but they won't.
