I work for a company that supplies real-time market data information. Our office is just 3 blocks from the World Trade Center. The data center is actually just across the street from the WTC. On 9/11 this data center was damaged and unusuable, but since we had a duplicate data center in NJ, we were able to be up and running a week later. We could have started sooner, but the markets were closed, so there was no data to send out.
We also have three separate environments, development, staging and production. Only QA approved software is allowed to run in the production environment.
A hospital should have a backup network in cases of catastrophe.
