Speed is sexy, of course, but what about just bringing things closer together? Replacing urban sprawl with accomodating (not communist) apartment complexes would be one step towards making a commute faster. What new technologies would make this more possible?
My bet is on the removal of the save button in many applications. As information becomes easier for programs to verify and catagorize, inputed information will be saved automaticly. Similarly Copy / Paste will probably depriciate as automatic catagorization causes information to flow to the right locations. One example of a better used Copy / Paste is in come calculator programs. Selecting what to copy is not required. Copy automaticly grabs the number shown. An example that shows the deprication of the save button would be the automatic parsing and catagorizig of sentences as they are typed. Nothing would need to be manually saved as the information would already be in the right spot and saved automaticly.
I would agree with this, except that it makes for somewhat inefficient programs when one blows a couple extra megs of ram. Efficient, small programs are better long run because they are easier to maintain and run faster. However, for a hack, macgyver job nearly anything can be used.
I can think of one good reason for Linux to have an easier installation process. I've wanted to switch from Windows for several years now. However, not having any Linux experience makes a proper installation very complicated. Consequently, I'm still using Windows until I have time to figure everything out. Unfortunartely, it's hard to learn about an OS when one doesn't have it to use. I love the idea of Linux, but until the learning curve drops on a free version, I'll probably keep using WIN98se.
I finally got tired of the legal / ethical debate of using propriatary media. So I deleted several gigs and am starting over, looking for the good stuff that hasn't been commercialized. So far mp3.com and bmwfilms has had some good content.
