  1. I think Joel is a dork on The Law of Leaky Abstractions · · Score: 1

I have never heard of Joel before, but he strikes me as an idiot. His premise is ridiculous. The logic he uses in criticizing TCP/IP, SQL, and C, C++ etc is not only flawed (TCP and IP perform different functions as a team approach to solving the networking problem, and have been doing a pretty good job at it for 30 odd years), but reflect a skewed perspective on computer science. Rather than have the due respect to the tools he uses to make a living, and their respective creators, he smugly suggests he could do it better. These tools are pretty neat and ingenious approaches to solving real world problems. They are not perfect, but have stood the test of time. Joel's article was nothing more than a press release about his new Foggy Creek Software product. He fails to mention that it too was built on at least some of these leaky abstraction layers. I tired of overly lubricated, intellectual masterbation from poseur arm chair quarterbacks of computer science. Sure he went out of his way to regale us with his credentials and unquestioned authority. Kind of reminded me Dennis Miller trying to be witty, wise, and urbane while feigning a passion for football. Computer science is not perfect, but attacking some of its truly most remarkable advances to promote some pussified bug tracking software makes it easy to be a consultant. I enjoy steering my clients away from hype and bullshit like this. Joel's nstead of writing weak articles or software to track the bugs of dumbshits who believe you should be able to develop software with wizards, why don't you try your hand at replacing TCP, IP, SQL, C, or C++ with a better solution?
