The govt, Federal, does have things to do, that the individual can't...like national defense. Things like that, allow the individual to live and thrive locally.
For roads and schools and infrastructure, the local/state govt is better at that than the individual.
However, beyond these for the most part...we could be best served with govt staying out of the way and out of our lives.
There *is* a place for govt...but it needs to go back to being much more limited like it was in the beginning of the US.
This is evident in your closing statement: the needs of the one outweigh the many. This statement is more apt at describing a tyranny than any system that values individuals.
If the US actually value individuals and personal responsibility, neither would "outweigh" the other. A more appropriate statement would be:
I was speaking more from an individual point of view, than a govt point of view on that last one.
In that..."I" and my family are more important than yours to me, and I will adjust my actions accordingly. Life is a contest, etc.
In every day life, I don't go out of my way to put someone down or keep you from your goals, but if it come down to you vs me for something I need or want, then I fight for it for myself and my family over you. If it comes down between you and I, I will always fight to win for me.
Our country was built by individuals banding together to accomplish tasks that no individual can accomplish alone. We encourage both the individual *and* the group.
From what I can gather...the founding fathers weren't for Federal Govt. mandated, forced banding together of individuals for purposes such as you suggest.
Nothing wrong with people getting together, and they should in some cases, but the govt shouldn't force you to do so, nor force you to PAY for it either.
Things like national defense, sure.
Local things like roads, schools, general infrastructure and such...good on state level.
I can't think of terribly much anything else that requires govt to do that the individual can't possibly do
What do so many Americans have such fear/hatred of Socialism?
Because it is the antithesis of the values and principals that America was built upon.
We value the individual, the person that can take his own matters into his own hands and succeed. Personal responsibility and individual effort are what brought such success to the US over its life, until about now.
The thought has been in the US, that the government is there just enough for basic needs (military, police, fire, etc), and largely stays out of your way to allow you to succeed or fail as you see fit.
Many (self included) see the recent years of people depending ever more on the govt., not taking responsibility for their own actions, people not being allowed to fail, and more and more intrusive govt. as being the major factors into our fiscal and economic woes.
The US was built upon the individual small business, and right now, it seems most all levels of govt are going out of their way to make this more and more difficult and kill things off.
The US was built and succeeded with methods directly opposing true socialism.
The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.
Most of the people who buy CS are the ones who use it to make money and so have more to lose and are more likely to get busted for piracy. They are, by definition, professional users. The amateurs don't make money using CS, aren't likely to get caught pirating it, and most of them don't want to pay $499 for it.
Because amateurs don't buy CS. Amateurs don't drop the thousands of dollars that Adobe charges for CS on a photo editor. They use Elements, an alternative, or pirate it.
Or, you get yourself a student ID or use one from a student and get the suite for like $499.
And yes, I read the TOS, and it is prefectly legal to use the Student/Teacher editions for commercial money making ventures explicitly (look under the "how can I use my software" section).
I guess I'll be bying CS6, and staying with that for awhile.
I don't want to 'rent' software.
I'd heard that Adobe had just recently stopped selling their products on CD/DVD's and only had downloadable. I don't really like that as that I really prefer to keep physical install media, but I can live without if need be.
But, renting software, is unacceptable to me.
What happens after awhile if for some reason, I can't or don't wish to connect said computer to the internet to check in? I just go dark and that's acceptable?
They didn't create this problem for themselves, you want them to fix it without help?
Really?
Who pray tell, thrust this upon them?
What policy(ies) passed in say the 60's started the downhill all of the US black culture to the point where we have it currently today?
What help do you suggest? Is there really something we can legislate to make more black men responsible for their offspring and stick around to help raise them? Is there a way to legislate poorer black families teaching their youth that guns, gangs and general thug-dom aren't the paths to try to work for in life, and that they should instead value an education for a career in life that likely will not involved being a famous rapper or basketball player?
Seriously....what can the outside world do to help this? What can the govt do to change attitudes and perceptions? You can't write a law to force people to think and act in a more proper and community serving manner....at least I don't know of a way, do you?
I would consider buying a Mac if its prices were about 1/2 what they are, and my understanding is that that would still generate a profit for them.
And therefore, you are not one of their customers. That's not a good/bad thing, just the way it is. Apple is not marketing to you.
One of the main things any business, ones that want to stand out from the crowd, or be a 'high end' player in their market has to be able to do, is look at some people and say "Sorry, but you are not my kind of customer", and be willing to walk away from those that aren't willing to spend the money you want for your product. There are plenty of folks out there with disposable income that *ARE* willing to pay higher prices for product they perceive is being worth more, and even possibly prestigious.
To be perceived as a high end product by many of the masses, you have to be willing not to lower your prices or have lower end products that would actually cater to the masses that don't have those amounts of money to spend. It is a fine balance to strike.
How to address black-on-black violence in the US is a very different subject.
Sounds like a problem the black community needs to solve for themselves, like raising their kids to respect the value of a human life more. Black families didn't have these types of serious, out of control violence problems prior to the 60's as far as I know...? At least not this prevalent and wide spread.
Regardless, it isn't a problem that can be legislated away, and they certainly aren't going to listen to anything a bunch of white guys suggest to them.
With respect to the bluetooth thing in your ear "all the time"...I see this primary done on a racial line.
It may only be anecdotal evidence, but my observations over the past few years is....I pretty much see only the bluetooth receiver in the ear all the time primarily with one race, at least here in the US.
Has anyone else noticed this or is it maybe just my part of the country?
Wow...its getting so that you can't make an observation these days, if it involves race, without anyone freaking out over it. C'mon, I didn't even mention which race I had noticed this about, and yet severely down modded.
Are those out there that get immediately uptight about anything alluding to the differences in culture and actions between races and ethnicities (sp?), in essence saying that no one should ever discuss or point out things that are different? Are you that uptight about pointing out the distinctions between the genders?
I wasn't saying anything was wrong, bad or making fun, only that I observed differences and wondering if anyone else had noticed the same.
And again, look..I didn't even MENTION which race I noticed this about.

Hell, I'd think most new fathers would welcome the time OUT of the home and away from all the crying and diapers for a bit.
It isn't like they need to be there to breast feed, etc.....they did their business when they fucked.
After that, about all they are there for is $$ support till the kid gets old enough to start talking and interracting, and then fathering begins really.
Between coming and then....men are largely useless and unneeded for newborns. Women are built for that early stuff.
Hey, as long as men can continute to get paid more, then cool.
I mean, it *is* the women having the kids and having to miss all that work and disrupt the business groups.
So, as long as they keep it that way, I suppose fair is fair....the guys are having to take up the slack not only for births, but also when kids have to be picked up from school for being sick, or school holidays, etc.
It is even worse if you are a single guy, the whole office expects YOU to work all the time to pick up the slack for their time off they need for 'family' time. Single guys should be paid the highest rate since they have to clean up for everyone else needing all that time off.
I guess government sponsored and press-fueled hysteria hasn't reached this part of the world yet. If this had happened in the lower 48 they'd be discussing potential links to terrorist groups on Fox News.
Don't kid yourself, it wouldn't just be Fox news....it would be all of them.
If these kids did this in FL, they'd be on trial for felony hacking.
But in this case, he didn't do anything TO the machine unlawful, he didn't modify it.
According to the approved and tested code on this machine, it was acting according to its code. He merely used the machine as it was coded to act.
No crime here.
Just because said code wasn't to the benefit of the owner is not the customers fault, nor his responsibility.
Much like card counting is not illegal and not a cheat, if done without mechanical aid, since it is playing the system based on the rules given, he was playing this machine based on the rules coded within it.
They have a machine...he didn't sigh any EULA or agreements about how to use it.
The main use of this machine is you put money into it, you hit buttons, it sometimes pays out.
He found a combination of buttons that causes it to pay out a LOT.
I see no problem with what he did. He simply put money in and pushed buttons on machine set out in public for the purpose of people pushing buttons and sometimes getting money out of it.
Show where he violated the signed terms of use or NDA or other type contract on exactly HOW he was to use the machine, and maybe you have a case.
One problem I see is..they look so fugly on peoples' roofs!!!
I was kinda taken aback, here in New Orleans, one of the old, beautiful tile roofs, covered with solar panels.
Talk about making the home look horrible.
I don't mind if you can put them on the back roof where no one can see them, but man...if on the front of the house, they sure would seem to drive down your curb appeal, and hence limit who you could sell to for a decent price when it comes time to sell and move.
What's the risk to these panels from hail storms? Are they impervious to those?
If not, does your warranty cover that or is that money out of your pocket? If so, now much? If insurance, how much extra do you have to pay for home insurance with the panels installed?
Where have you been the last 5+ years? Did you *see* who got re-elected? Captain "Social Justice" Obama.
I know it take some people a few years to figure out left and right, but when you're old enough to post to slashdot, you should really have figured out what left is by now (and NO, not by European standards...we're talking US here).
Based on *empirical* evidence, when a tax is put on carbon, and then credited towards energy efficiency, people quickly end up paying less on their electricity bills because they need less of it.
PLEASE lets get back to the thought that taxes are made solely to fund necessary govt services (federal and state), and should NOT be used to try to mold or direct human behavior.
It is not (especially the feds) their fucking role to try to mold my behavior or influence how I choose to live my life. They are there to answer to ME, the citizen, not the other way around!

Perfectly legal to purchase this way.

VERY few people have the luxury of the time to spend to tweak and get everything perfect and "just so".

Not at all...he even got into the good graces of a really cute girl in his class when he changed her grades too.
I think later on tho....he moved, and changed his name to Ferris.
