I mean the internet is a very good example of what you just described. I daresay nothing came of it while govt. controlled it. Only when private sector got involved did things get interesting.

You're right. That's when we got um...err...Internet Explorer! And, uhh...Flash!

Hey wait a second! Get off my lawn!! ;)

What if the building were owned by a corporation, all of the shareholders were occupants and all of the occupants were shareholders?

That would work out really well. In fact, it's already been done.

Sure, that would be true if we were an isolated community that didn't interact with the rest of society. Fortunately most of us don't live on some secret island compound removed from everybody else. If you choose not to have kids, you're really just providing a tiny bit of error correction. That's a choice that anybody can make.

Surely you don't believe that parents are the only source of ideas and values children are exposed to? Most are sorely in need of other positive role models and mentors--neither of which have a biological prerequisite.

Too many people is the problem. The solution will therefore be extremely messy no matter what we do. And unless you're ready to step up to the plate and declare that you will never have any children, don't be so quick to chastise others for their lack of commitment.

Well, there you go. Go vegan. Don't have kids. Get rid of your car.

It's really not all that hard. Then again, since most people have a nasty habit of misspelling "citizen" as "consumer", I don't expect most folks will be making those choices any time soon.

Oh well, nature will make them for us I suppose.

Seriously? Come on. The first Matrix was a cool sci-fi kung-fu movie with an interesting story. The sequels threw out any semblance of a plot and turned it into some ridiculous live action Dragon Ball Z.

For as bad as the new Starwars films were, they were far superior to the Matrix sequels. I think I actually fell asleep during the last one.

Lucky for you, oggenc and mpg123 can be used to re-encode your music. Actually, you might want to do this anyway, to free up some disc space (I am in the process, because my disc is beginning to get a bit full).

On that note, it is very easy to do this from the command line. Of course, you'll then need to use vorbiscomment to bring over all the id3 information. Or you can give additional flags to oggenc:

    mpg321 -w - somesong.mp3 | oggenc -o somesong.ogg -

No. It's the motivation that defines terrorism.

Terrorism is the threat or carrying-out of violence with an intent to cause political change to your target population. It's the same as extortion, but the demand isn't monetary.

This kid is not a terrorist because his motivation was the same as a graffiti artist - to have a little fun at someone else's expense.

Exactly. Terrorism is politically motivated. This guy is just your run-of-the-mill sociopath.

IF he set out to expose how shitty the security of 911 is and followed up with messages sent to the media threatening to engage in a campaign of SWATting until 911 got fixed... That would be terrorism.

Or, IF certain elements of a certain government were to perpetuate a certain climate of fear and uncertainty, in order to erode civil liberties thus causing profoundly detrimental social and political change... That would be terrorism, no?

Misusing this term and needlessly invoking it to trigger a psychological effect, for nothing more than rhetorical emphasis—purposefully or otherwise—is indicative of how bad this problem has become. We should be aware of what we say, otherwise we're just perpetuating the very problem.

No, he didn't commit terrorism. Can we all please stop misusing this term? Seriously, it's the fact that everyone is trained to break out the "T word" for every little stupid scenario that gives the idea so much power in the first place.

Is this kid a criminal? Check. A lunatic? Check. Sadistic? Probably. An asshole? Definitely. But a terrorist, I think not.

Just because you cause somebody to experience fear does not make you a terrorist. If you believe that, just about any violent crime is terrorism. The thing is, I agree with what you are saying, but you've fallen into the trap of perpetuating the fear mongering that makes living in a post 9/11 world suck so much.

IANAL but surely this legal text is irrelevant anyway? Surely no pirate could defend themselves by saying "there was no legal warning against piracy on the video so I thought I could copy it." So why bother?

The warning isn't targeted at the people actually making the copies, they are meant for those that might consume them. As you've already pointed out, the pirates don't bother to remove the warnings, and even if they did it's still likely that people will see the ad anyway at some point.

Think about it. Just like Homer, most people are the "easily suggestible type." They know that DRM will ultimately be unable to save them so they go for the brainwash method--it's like the weaklings telling the vikings that there going to hell if they don't stop burning down their village. Sadly, historically this has worked out fairly well.
