  1. Licence Woes on Suck Says Mozilla Is Dead · · Score: 1

I think it's a shame that Mozilla was not GPL'd, since the MPL is incompatible with GPL'd code. Galeon is currently running into some licence trouble because of this.

If it wasn't for the MPL, we could rip out anything we wanted to use and stick it into other projects. Gecko definitely shows lots of promise, but right now its use is limited for non-technical reasons.

  2. Mobile Linux and Other Debian-based distros on Ask 'Ian' From Debian · · Score: 5

Despite promises from Lineo and Blue Cat to be the embedded Linux specialists, Transmeta is using Debian as a base for its Mobile Linux. In addition, Corel uses Debian for its own distro.

Do you see Debian becoming a base upon which other distributions are built instead of "just another Linux distribution[1]." Given the amount of ports Debian has expanded to (x86, 68k, Sparc, Alpha, ARM, i-opener, etc), do you see it becoming the uber-distro for embedded (and unorthodox) systems?

[1]We all know that Debian is more than this, of course.

  3. Re:What's with the anti-Nike? on No Logo: Taking Aim At The Brand Bullies · · Score: 1

Actually, in No Jobs, Klein takes us south of Manilla to an Export Processing Zone to see what the horrible conditions are there. If you have only heard of the protest but are unfamiliar with the practices, read this book. It does go into sweatshop labour, with interviews with the workers, descriptions of the "behind enemy lines" reporting and the fully armed factory guards.

It then goes on to show that Nike does in fact have a "Code of Conduct" that is supposed to prove that slave labor isn't possible. However, there are two problems with this:

    1) It is only available in English and to North Americans. All of the factory workers that Klein interviewed had never heard of such a document stating that they actually rights.

    2) It is no a legally binding document. Nike can make as many "Codes of Conduct" as they like and they won't have to follow through.

Klein discussed that later in the book, where she claims the next battle will be fought. Will Nike be allowed to police itself or will worldwide organizations impose laws that force Nike factories to be inspected by third parties?

And it's not all anti-Nike. There are stories of Gap factory workers urinating in plastic bags beneth their tables for fear of getting beaten for asking to go to the bathroom. There are also similar stories for Disney, Tommy Hilfiger, Esprit, Apple, IBM and countless others.

Pick up the book at your local library and skim through it and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about in this review.

  5. Not surprising but still unpleasant on Corel Linux Beta License Violates GPL · · Score: 1

I think we all realized that this was possible. Corel is used to making and distributing commercial software and despite its good intentions has failed to observe a few rules by which we free software devotees live by. Although this really disappoints me, I'm hoping that they can remove these stupid restrictions and continue to be a commercial supporter to the movement.
