That is what is known as a "ground effect vehicle".

    Pilots have guns.

Arming pilots is a stupid idea. If the cockpit is inaccessible that will solve the problem. Pilots should be flying the plane. If you want someone to go around shooting passengers put an air marshall on board.

I wouldn't trust someone who has no special air marshall skills and last trained with a gun when they were in the military 30 years ago. Would you?

  3. Re:What IS Boeing's business strategy? on Boeing Sonic Cruiser Project Shelved · · Score: 1

Why are the only options you consider valid ones that involve bigger or faster planes? Fuel costs are HUGE for airlines. The 777 doesn't do anything terribly special as far as speed or capacity - but it is very efficient. Continuing down a path of more efficient planes of similar size to those already being sold is a viable strategy.

  4. Re:many perspectives on Still More RIAA News · · Score: 1

That's basically what in investigation into the supply & demand curve would involve. The kind of datapoints you're discussion would be the demand line. Since large publishers act as a cartel they have limited monopoly pricing power (there are other publishers so they can't get totally out of whack). So that's a near vertical supply line. Of course, there is also the $0 option (or, in many cases, the street vendor hard copy fakes that are available). If the RIAA chooses their supply price poorly they're simply going to reduce demand and foster support for the alternatives.

As a trade group would the RIAA be considered "not-for-profit" and therefore eligible to receive the $67 million?

I'm glad also not to hear you (quite) say, "Well, I'd stop stealing if they'd just lower prices." Stealing will always be free (esp. when P2P cuts out the street corner middle man in the trenchcoat), and they can never compete with free. Just say "no" to extortion. :)

It's already been pointed out that downloading has a time cost associated with it. Owning a CD also has a benefit (pretty CD graphics and booklet and a permanent "backup" that I don't need to spend extra for).

The real problem is that many people are willing to pay $8-10 for a CD but this is usually not an option. Given the choice between paying $18 and paying $0 many people choose $0.

  7. Whom to trust on Newest Scam: Fake Escrow Accounts · · Score: 1

I just find it humorous that people would not trust a buyer/seller on eBay because they don't know them - but they will trust an escrow "company" they have never used before just because they have a website.

Of course there is still the problem of companies that act legitimate for a while and then screw all their customers at once. I seem to recall that happened with a laptop seller recently.

That was a criminal case. Unfortunately we tend to believe accusations made (particularly of women against men) without any substantiation.

Even after an accusation turns out to be false some people have trouble coming to grips with that and continue to believe the original accusation. There was a similar case where even after the girl admitted she made the story up people continued to spit on the man in public.

The desktop UI was very customizable too: you could customize the background in every folder - which was pointless, but cool. You could create custom icons for every folder, or use predefined ones. The keybindings were a bit... strange (remember CTRL-INSERT for COPY, SHIFT-INSERT for paste?) - although ALT-F4 lives on to this day in Windows.

Umm, have you tried shift-insert in windows lately?

disclaimer: The above (top) quotation made by using shift-insert and control insert

Unfortunately the 970 will reportably be speed equivalent to the current top Intel chips but come out 6 - 10 months later. That would at least be an improvement over the current systems in which Apple is lagging by at least 16 months on the performance scale (and worsening each month).
