When your talking about Carbon Fiber monocoque construction I assume your talking about F1 cars? These cars cost millions to build and the process that they use to create the carbon fiber strong enough to support the car is extremely expensive and can not be easily automated because of the precision which the carbon fiber needs to be created with (read: there are many different grades of carbon fiber. The one Honda Boy has for his hood is waaaay different than that used in aerospace/motorsport applications). Also, these are purpose built race cars with roll cages a couple of inches from your head. The drivers wear a burn suit/helmet/neck restraint. For all of these reasons, a race car on the street is NOT a better way.

I read the review and couldn't find out if it was easily programable or if it is only (easily) used to display uptime, temp., etc... If you can program it to easily output any information that you want, then this is truly useful. You could build a nice little mp3 server for your car/home with track output through this on the dashboard/stero rack.

Can anyone think of any other cool uses for a fully programmable display like this?

Umm... You don't have to escape a double quote if you use a single quote around the echo. However, if you want to include variables ($foo) then you will have to use the double quotes and yes escape them. I don't see this as a usability flaw, its just the way it has to be for the interpreter to read what your trying to program. Would you rather it try to guess what you are trying to accomplish; Or would you rather make PHP harder to learn by using obscure charicters around echo statements?

No, this is very much "Ontopic." To a certain extent, free software and free speech go hand in hand. Free software, like free speech, both have limitations in their use while at the same time are both incredibly powerful tools. However, the fact that free software is less of a threat to the aristocratic leaders in these countrys makes it easier for them to accept. Perhaps the acceptance of free software will bring the idea of free speech to the foreground. I'm not saying that free software will lead to free speech, but it will help.

I hate to reply to my own comment, but if there is anyone that would like to work on a project that brings linux programs to the masses, I would be willing to devote my time and server resources to the task. I think that it would be great to use this thread to discuss this proposition and to perhaps organize some sort of project.

  11. This is great on Roblimo Abroad: Pushing Linux' Prospects In Jordan · · Score: 5, Interesting

I love to see people go out of their way to pitch Linux to those that will contribute to the project by only being the user base. Rob and the whole Slashdot crew have done a great job of going out of their way to accept linux users as opposed to Linux developers (this talk, TechTV appearances, etc..). In the end, you can only have so many programmers contribute to the project, but you can never have enough users. Perhaps there should be more pages devoted to linux users as opposed to linux programmers.

For example, if sites like Freshmeat and Sourceforge were set-up more like cnet's download.com we would see more people interested in the prospect of software from these sites. It is very intimidating to some to see project's source code, developers, etc... There is no lack of great programs on Sourceforge and Freshmeat(difference?) but there is a lack of information on how to use these programs. Many open source projects lack an easy to understand information page. Also, I don't think that it would be a bad idea to port some of the more important projects to other operating systems. A great example of this is the PHP and MySQL projects that offer IIRC an older version of the software complied in .exe. However, this was done out of necessity because most people develop php/mysql solutions on Windows machines to run on Apacche.

What does everyone think of this? Is there a way to make the Linux programs (as opposed to just the operating system) more accessable to non-programmers?

It was like disney hell.

Another side note however, I would think that they could design this robot to be harmless. Example: give it no sharp edges, make the dino. shuffle its feet instead of taking big steps. If Disney makes this Dino. it is going to be the NERF BALL equivelant of the dinosaur world.
