If you don't know WHY you need the data you plan on handling, or how to HANDLE the data you need then XML WILL do nothing but complicate things.
If you do know what data you need and how you are going to handle it then XML is useless.
Take the time to understand your data path instead of wasting time building ambigious data structures.
I don't understand the idea of building applications to capture unknown data sources to do things with the data.. And if you do know what the data is then skip the XML parsing bloat and DO IT.
You don't need to be a super genius to intuitively know that XML is shit. If you can make your project work without it (all projects can).. save yourself the hassle.
ANTISPAM is cyberterrorism! I say execute all the anti-spammers as terrorists, and use their bodies as meat to feed the hungry. Put them in little cans labeled, "anti-Spam."
Everyone is trying to filter spam.
The simplest solution is community regulated attacks on spammers.
Shut them down with their own shit. A little program that let's you submit offenders and carries out attacks on targeted offenders.
I write this as my mailbox fills with spam for anti-spam programs.
A real anti-spam program attacks and disables spammers.. Filtering shit just makes things worse. It masks the problem instead of eliminating it.
I am one of the original operators/founders for a free music site on the web in 1994. The second largest music archive of the time (next to IUMA). And a technological trend setter with the use of incredible MP2 (yes two) technology.
My view of the current state of the music industry is this: Bands/Artists who continue to rely on industry to make money and not MUSIC will always get fucked and deserve to be fucked. They place their value in their relationship with the record companies and the RC's assests and not their fans. It's common business sense to make your CUSTOMER happy (fans), focus on your product(MUSIC, PERFORMING) and your relationship with your customers (FANS).
SO WHY would a band give away control of their most important assests for PENNIES? Because they are stupid and they are greedy. Which is funny since in return for their greed they get the opposite of what they lust for.
It's not very different than a small software company selling out completely to investors who steer the company first into disaster and then recover large amounts of money at the expense of the original upstart.
The alternative is CLEAR. Why bands don't see this i really don't know and no longer care. The alternative is to PLAY fucking music. PLAY ALOT. PLAY in front of crowds. That's how a band gets paid. That's how a band develops a "customer" base. Don't waste ALL of your time and effort copywriting songs that suck.. MAKE MORE SONGS. LOTS OF SONGS. And play them. Make copies of your music. Let people listen to them and use them and make copies of them. This will widen your customer base. This will open more opportunity to PLAY more and make more music. THEN and ONLY then will people MAYBE be willing to pay for your Music. The REAL drive of buying art is the support of the expression in the hopes that the expression will continue to grow.
Two examples of bands that have made this incredibly SIMPLE process work are the Grateful Dead and PHISH. Not to mention hundreds of DJ's and electronic acts who are driven by their love of PLAYING and PERFORMING music.
If a band or artist does not love music and performing enough to do it everyday they will be pushed out of the market by ones that are. Just like in ANY business. Bands should look at performing and making music as their job. Not something they do as part of their Music career and inbetween being famous and broke.
I'm not as big fan of those bands i mentioned. I do like them but it is funny how their lifestyles and business plans resemble eachother.
Do you think bands that tour 325 days out of the year make money? Fucking A right they do. And if they love doing it they are fucking lucky individuals.
As for the RIAA, why sit around and whine at them? Why should they give away all their assests? Why should they let people steal their money? They won't. And people won't stop stealing it. The whole fight is a stupid waste of time for people who want to make music. Placing SO much emphasis on the RIAA is admitting they hold some supreme power over artists and art in general. And if you think that is the case then you don't understand anything about real music or art.
There can be nothing wrong with. I don't think ANY ISP wants child porn or any morally illegal activity running over their network. So why not suggest a little more attention? But what boggles my mind is how dealers of child porn on a large scale are able to get merchant accounts? And use credit cards??? Shouldn't the credit companies with more money then god be forced to police this? Fucking retarded. HOW does someone accept credit cards on a porn site. What a joke.

I've been an "IT" person for about 10 years now.
Frankly i find most systems frustrating and much of it just plain useless. I get paid to install and manage useless frustrating systems.
I am NOT being paid by "techies" i am being paid by fucking morons that have been sold a dream. Morons that will conclude i don't know what i am talking about or doing unless i spend 90 % of my day confusing the shit out of them and the other %10 making sure i am one up on the buzz notions.
If this Washington Post moron wants to use his fucking 8086 to run dos edit then he should complain to his Pimp.. And complain about his pimp. Not the other whores in his string. They are just a bunch of bitches like him. Sucking cock for money. Pretending to be useful so they can collect their beer money without to much humiliation.
I guess everyone will be switching over ASAP. The reasons are obvious.
Ofcourse when new versions of Office appear (and they already have) and everyone in the building full of Linux thin clients wants and needs access to the functionality not supported by this solution.. You will just run around to every machine putting a pc with windows shit on it and getting shit from people that "told you what we needed".
if this isn't a concern use StarOffice. make you're life even simpler.
I think you are telling me in hopes that others will understand and want this as a solution. I don't see this happening. I guess time will tell.
"But... wtf am I telling YOU this for? All you have to do is think about it for a minute. *sigh*"
if you like it.. sell it. spread the word. Hell implement it in your own office. What's that? You don't use/pay for MSoffice? You intuitively know this is going to save people money though.. and it's better.
if all people are doing in your office is banging away on a word processor then make them use StarOffice.. if it's a little more complicated then that then use something that works...
What next? Lindows? hahahaha
This seems idiotic to me. Interesting endevour.. But what is the purpose? You still have to pay for licenses of office. Now you have to setup all this shit so people can run windows apps on linux "thin clients"... What does a copy of win98 cost? And a PC to run it and Windows? Is this solution saving you money? Time?
It's seems like a very complicated way to open Word documents.

What's needed is something that will announce all
kinds of real-time content. Video streams, audio
streams/ radio/TV satellite / time sensitive
media files etc. etc...
The ADVANTAGE of having a networked computer on top of your TV is not it's ability to record Friends on Thursdays.. It would have to give you access to content you otherwise would not be able to enjoy. When you want to enjoy it ofcourse.
TiVo is great but it doesn't tell me about or give me access to some streamed lecture i want to watch. Or an internet radio show i might like and have no idea about. What about a Flash Demo available for a week from some online studio?
XMLTV needs to look beyond TVGuides and into the entire world of available realtime / time sensitive media. We need a guide that incorporates MPEG-7 standards, is distributed and 0fcourse realtime like the media we are consuming.
I like TV because it is easy. But even the guides on my SAT are to much work. Give me idiot box access to EVERYTHING. A nice Filter that lists all content(streams/TV/radio/etc...) i might be interested in.
Also.. that PVR is pretty shite. No disrespect..
I have a linux powered front door mat i should submit to Slashdot.
