Well, here in Germany you can pay with EC in almost everywhere. Most EC Cards also have a "Money Chip". On this chip you can store up to 300â, IIRC.
Paying with the Chip on your card seems to be much cheaper for the stores than EC, because you can use it in almost every store, you can even buy Bus Tickets at vending machines with it, or buy your bread at the bakery.
Don't assume that just because some elderly people in the Bayern area of Germany are still using cash even for large transactions that the whole of Germany does.
